Junior Match Reports - 2011/12 Season

Withycombe U8s v touring sides on Sunday 6th May 2012

W 11 - 7 | W 11 - 6

Withycombe U8`s welcomed two touring sides last Sunday on a sun kissed Raleigh Park in their last ever games of tag rugby. First up was Cleve rugby club from Bristol and it was the young Withy boys who triumphed in a 11 tries to 7 win. Alfie Gillard and Charlie Passmore collected hat tricks and there were singles for James Griffin, Paddy McGuinness, Erin Assleman, Ollie Willis and Sam Skinner. Charlie Tyler was unlucky not to add to the tally with some last gap tagging.

Match two followed after a short break against Newport High School Old Boys and any fatigue Withys had was soon forgotton with an impressive win by 11 tries to 6. Erin Assleman led the way with five tries and Charlie Passmore, Alfie Gillard and the ever alert Paddy McGuinness picked up two tries apiece. Both games were at a lightning pace but it was the Withy boys who had just a little more gas in their tanks and the ability to snap up any knock ons that was the difference. Special mention must go to the boys who couldn't make it in Ollie Hempstead, Joe Farmer, Joseph Bowdon, Harry Williams and Harry Bennett who unfortunately has a broken arm. Many thanks to all the parents for their superb support and their linesman Chubby Skinner and of course the coaches Tony Willis, Dave Passmore and Ben Assleman.

A great display of U9s rugby during all matches, with 5 Withy volunteers partnering up with lads from Redruth/St Agnes, quickly coming together to form an unbeatable "Barbarians" team.

With the wind and rain politely staying away for the Saturday afternoon the rugby was played with great enthusiasm by all and it was fitting that the combined team of Devonian/Cornish Barbarians took the honours. This mini tournament was a fantastic advert of the true friendly spirit of rugby. The rest of the tour was taken up by an afternoon BBQ and socialising for the "older" touring party well into the evening !

Withycombe RFC would like to thank St Agnes RFC for their hospitality and wish them well in their 40th Anniversary year.

Semi Final

Withycombe v Exeter Saracens
L 0 : 1
Up against usual tough and sizable opposition Withy worked hard and took the game to Sarries competing very well in the first half HT 0:0. Despite all the good work the lads dropped their guard to allow Sarries in with a winning try.

Summary

In their last competitive games of the first season of contact rugby Withycombe U9s acquitted themselves admirably to reach the Semi Finals of the Devon U9s competition and can count themselves unlucky to not reach the final. The progress made can be measured in the final performance against Exeter Saracens who have provided very tough opposition to the boys during earlier encounters this season. The squad has developed into a hard working unit, competing fiercely in the tackle and at the breakdown to hold onto and win possession, backed up with a fast running strike force. The boys can look forward to further developing their game for next season. Next up tour to St Agnes in Cornwall and then final home game against touring side Cleve to wrap up a very encouraging first season of contact.

Withycombe U8s away to Totnes on Sunday 22nd April 2012

Today Withycombe under 8s made the trip to Totnes in their last competitive match before contact rugby next season. In the first match, Withies ran out comfortable winners by 10 tries to 4.  Harry Bennett with four tries led the way followed by two tries each from Charlie Passmore and Paddy McGuinness, a single scores from Erin Assleman and a fine solo try from Ollie Hempstead. Great tagging from James Griffin kept the Totnes youngsters at bay.

Match two Withies won by 9 tries to 3, with man of the match Sam Skinner setting the pace with a hat trick. This was matched by the prolific Charlie Passmore taking his tally of tries for the season to over 100. Harry Bennett, Alfie Gillard and Erin Assleman scored a try apiece. Fantastic tagging from Withies meant the ball was turned over no fewer than five times. What was pleasing to see was the interchange of passing play before being tagged between the young Withy boys and also the alertness to snap up any knock ons resulting in scores. All eight boys today were from Withycombe Junior School. Next week Withies are at the Ivybridge friendly festival in their last away matches of a fantastic season.

Withycombe U7s against Exmouth and Croesyceiliog on Sunday 25th March 2012

W 6 - 9 | W 4 - 7

On a superbly sunny morning the youngest Withycombe side travelled the short distance to Exmouth to play a round of matches against the hosts and Croesyceiliog, a touring side from Cwmbran, Wales. The local derby took centre stage to begin the day, and it turned out to be another fine game from Withycombe. Some free running saw the Withies race into a three - one lead with tries from Joe Gosling, Tom Waiton and Curtis Fraser. Exmouth then scored the next try, before Withycombe again took control of the game with some close support play to over power the Exmouth defence, this resulted in tries from Baxter Wiliiams and Joe Gosling. This saw the teams turn around at 2-5. The second half was much more of an even affair as Withycombe took the foot of the pedal and played a much more casual game. This resulted in eight tries shared evenly between the sides throughout the half. Withycombe showed good hands and bright awareness in the pass to score at will whenever Exmouth got on the score sheet. The second half tries came from Ebony Mardle, Jack Macdonald-Brown and Jack Greaves. Final score Exmouth 6 Withycombe 9.

Try scorers: Joe Gosling, Ebony Mardle 2, Tom Waiton 1, Curtis Fraser 1, Baxter Williams 1, Jack Greaves 1, Jack Macdonald-Brown 1.

The second game of the day saw the youngest Withycombe side face their first taste of international rugby as the took on Welsh side Creosyceiliog, who are a feeder club of Newport Gwent Dragons. And they did not let anyone down. So much so that the first half was an almost endless tide of green and black towards the Welsh line. Slick passing and fast direct running proved to much for the visitors who could not get close as try followed try. The scores came from Baxter Williams, Jaydan Marles and Curtis Fraser. With one score in return the sides swapped sides at 6-1 to Withycombe. The second half again saw the Withie coaches play all the very youngest players together and again they showed they will having nothing to fear next year. Creosyceiliog did cross the line three times to the once from Tom Waiton, however all managed to tag well and they could have scored more themselves with a bit more patience. This will come and all should be very proud of their efforts. The game closed with the final score Withycombe 7 Creosyceiliog 4

Try scorers Baxter Williams 3, Jaydan Marles 2, Curtis Fraser 1, Tom Waiton 1

Man of the match: Baxter Williams for a five try haul, aggressive tagging and fast direct running.

Withycombe U10s at Paignton Festival on Sunday 25th March 2012

Withycombe under 10s are Paignton Festival CHAMPIONS!

With a squad of 20 the team travelled to Paington for the first of this year's festivals. The format was to play each of the other teams namely Kingsbridge, Avonvale, Tavistock, Brixham and Torquay in a league with the top two teams contending the final.

Game one was against a fired up Kingsbridge who were looking for revenge after last weekends defeat. Kingsbridge hit Withy hard and knocked the team back playing some very good rugby. Withies dug deep playing their part in an excellent opening game which set the tone for the rest of the day. Kingsbridge won 2-1, Harry Cartwright scoring.

Game two was against Avonvale with the Withies winning a close encounter 1-0, Kyle Parry scoring.

Game three against Tavistock saw Withycombe find their stride against a very strong Tavistock team who were chasing shadows as Withies running game finally came to the fore. Won 4-0, tries by Oscar Moyle 2 and Ben Bolwell 2.

Game four against Brixham who play a very good passing game but found it hard to break down the Withy defence. Won 2-0 Tries by Ben Bolwell

Game five against Torquay another close game with both sides strong defence making it hard to score the game ending in a 1-1 draw Harry Cartwight the try scorer.

This left Withycombe in the final having the same points as Tavistock but scoring one extra try, to face a confident Kingsbridge team.

Having lost out to Kingsbridge in the first game of the day Withies new they had to start well. The teams shape was excellent the tackles were hard and the backs were now getting their set moves into the game. Withies opened the scoring through Joe Blyth. But Kingsbridge hit back with one to level it up. Ben Bolwell scored Withies second after some relenting pressure had been put on Kings. The second half started and both teams were playing excellent rugby. Each side were held up over their respective try lines on more than one occasion. Both teams could have scored but neither did to leave Withycombe the winners 2-1.

Thanks to all at Paignton and the teams we played against on the day. The rugby was of the highest standard played in excellent spirit throughout. Also well done to all our boys for their effort and the parents for the support they gave.

Withycombe U8s at home v Torquay on Sunday 18th March 2012

D 8 - 8 | W 7 - 8

Withies U8`s welcomed Torquay today in their last tag match hoping to finish their fantastic season on a high. Sam Skinner jinxed his way over for the first try but Torquay bounced back with a score of their own. The lead changed hands several times with the hosts holding a slender lead. The Withy boys came out with a more positive attitude second half and began passing the ball before being tagged and this resulted with the prolific Charlie Passmore landing another hat trick, Harry Bennett weighed in with a brace and there were singles for Alfie Gillard and Harry Williams with the match finishing eight all.

Match two saw the young Torquay boys start off at a lightning pace with Withies missing too many tags and they soon raced into a five tries to one lead at half time. Some of their best rugby seen this season was saved for the second half and this showed with Withies coming to within one score at the final whistle. Charlie Passmore and Harry Bennett scored two apiece and there were singles for Erin Assleman, James Griffin and Paddy McGuinness in and eight tries to seven loss.

The Withy Under 8's have had a fantastic season having played 39 games resulting in an amazing 31 wins, 6 draws and only 2 losses. Many thanks go to all the coaches & the parents for their continued support.

Withycombe U10s away on Sunday 18th March 2012

Game one v Sidmouth W 10 - 5 | Game two v Kingsbridge W 20 - 0

Having been let down at the beginning of the week Sidmouth kindly invited the Withy under 10's to a three way fixture against themselves and Kingsbridge. On a fine Sunday mothers day morning the boys/girls arrived at the Sidford ground in good spirits having spoiled there mothers something rotten.

First up were Sidmouth. As ever against their  local rivals the game was keenly contested especially at the ruck and maul. The Withies started well but with some excellent defending by the home team were unable to score. Eventually after some intense pressure Withy scored through Ben Bolwell after a fine team effort. The second half came and the game continued with end to end rugby. The Withies fine defence held strong with Oscar Moyle leading the line. Ben Bolwell scored the second after the referee played an excellent advantage to allow him to pick up a loose ball from a ruck and dart down the blind side touch line to score. Sidmouth came back with a try from a short range penalty to make the final five minutes nail biting stuff for Withy to hold on to win.

Game two saw Kingsbridge take to the field on a high having beaten Sidmouth 25 - 0. This inspired Withycombe to their finest team effort of the season to win 20 - 0. This victory was based on excellent rugby skill in both attack and defence. The first try came after Kingsbridge were pushed back a third of the pitch by excellent defence and counter rucking. Ben Bolwell was held up short and the ball was quickly passed back to Oscar Moyle to run a good line to open the scoring. The forwards of Jason Farrant ,Harry Cartwright and Kyle Parry continued to put pressure on Kingsbridge. High praise must go to Kyle playing his first game as a forward, it wont be his last, as he played his best game for the team so far. The second came from Jason Farrant. The backs were now playing with more confidence passing the ball wide with some excellent interplay. Jason again scored after a good drive, with Oscar scoring the fourth. The second half saw some excellent play from Josh Arbury and Joe Blyth making some powerfull runs out of defence and a fine cover tackle from Lucas White to keep the Withy try line intact.
The final score 20 - 0.

Withycombe U7s at home v Cullompton on Sunday 11th March 2012

W 7 - 2 | W 9 - 4

A warm and sunny morning saw Cullompton as the visitors to Raleigh Park, with conditions that favoured fast running rugby and so it proved. The opening game saw the the youngest Withies open the scoring through making the most of any open spaces with some very good passing and the tries followed through Jack Greaves and two from Freddie Burnard. This along with some first class tagging saw the teams turn around at 3-0. The second half saw Cullompton get back two tries early on before Withycombe again started to exert themselves. Tom Waiton started the charge with a long range try, before Curtis Fraser made the most of some handling errors to pick the ball up and score in the corner. More superb passing and support play also saw Joe Gosling and Baxter Williams get themselves on the score sheet before the final whistle. Final score Withycombe 7 Cullompton 2.

Try scorers Freddie Burnard 2, Jack Greaves 1, Tom Waiton 1, Curtis Fraser 1, Joe Gosling 1, Baxter Williams 1

The second game saw Withycombe take the chance to play two very different teams in each half. In the early exchanges tries were swapped between the sides, before once again Withycombe started to pass the ball around from all over the park. This lead to two further tries one each from Baxter Williams and Jack Greaves. This saw the teams swap end at 4-2. For the second period Withycombe took the chance to once again play all of their youngest players and what a half came to pass. Again the sides exchanged four tries before once again the youngest Withies showed what they are made off. With the whole teams passing, and in particular Kieran Longs, going to hand and not a tag being missed the team ran in three more tries through Jayden Marles and Joe Gosling. mention must be made to the whole team for an exceptional performance, especially Brendan Moore for his best game so far.  Final score Withycombe 9 Cullompton 4

Try scorers Jaydan Marles 3, Joe Gosling 2, Baxter Williams 2, Jack Greaves 2

Man of the match went to the whole team for an excellent performance.

Withycombe U8s at home v Cullompton on Sunday 11th March 2012

W 14 - 10 | W 11 - 10

Withy U8`s welcomed Cullompton on a glorious sunny morning with again, a full squad of players. Although Cully only had the bear seven players, their skill at passing and tagging was a joy to see and at half time the score was tied at seven each. After a half time talk, Withy came out all guns blazing and just had the extra pace to run out 14 - 10 winners. Charlie Passmore led the way once again with four tries, Harry Bennett and Paddy Mcguiness had hat tricks, a brace from Sam Skinner and singles from Erin Assleman and Alfie Gillard.

The second game was a much closer affair with Withies winning by 11 tries to 10. The cully lads played their part in a very competitive match and their team play just showed what we have to do next season when we step up to contact rugby. Their legs didn't tire and thus push Withies all the way . Ollie Willis was the star of the show with his alertness for tagging and this was rewarded with a superb try. Harry Bennett starred with four tries and Erin Assleman and Charlie Passmore both had hat tricks to complete the scoring . A great team effort boys well refereed by Tony Willis

Withycombe U9s at home v Cullompton on Sunday 11th March 2012

L 1 - 3 (Warriors) | L 1 - 5 (Whirlwinds)

On a lovely spring morning Withycombe U9s played hosts to Cullompton at Raleigh Park. First up were the Withycombe Warriors. The first half was a very absorbing game for all who were watching with some very strong tackling and fine rucking from both teams. As a result much of the half was played in the middle third of the pitch with great re-cycling and passing of the ball by both teams. It took some great burrowing and quick hands from Jayden Gore to set Ben Wilkinson free with a typical speedy run to break the deadlock and score at the corner for Withy to go in to the break 1-0 up. In the second half Cully kept up the hard running, quick passing and strong tackling to deny Withy further scores but Withy ran out of steam towards the end of the game to concede three tries in quick succession to go down 1-3 - definitely a tale of two halves with Cully proving too strong over the full match!

Try Scorer: Ben Wilkinson 1
Man of the match: Eddie Warlow for his work in the Rucks

The second match for Withy Whirlwinds, comprised of seven new players plus 2 rolling subs from first game, started very much the same as the first with excellent performances from both sides in the rucks and tackles. Good ball handling was not enough to break the defences of either side until Tom Humphry scored, again in the corner, with one of his trademark jinking runs. Both teams showed good character in contact with a number of turnovers at the ruck but Withy held on to a 1-0 lead at half-time. In a mirror of the first game, some great support play and running from Cully got the better of the Withy side with five unanswered tries in the second period. An all round good performance for Cully in both matches with some stamina training ahead for the withy squad!!

Try scorer : Tom Humphry 1
Man of the match: Jack Coles for his support play in the middle of the park.

Withycombe U7s away v Exeter Saracens on Sunday 4th March 2012

L 4 - 9 | L 5 - 6

Withycombe welcomed a fast and well drilled Sarries team to Hulham road for two very tough games. Wight started well with a try from Ebony Mardle, this was quickly levelled up by Sarries who then took the lead with three more very well worked tries. The young Withies fought back just before the half with a try from Jack Greaves. The half ended at 2-4. The second half saw the young withies given a bit of a lesson in how to pass before getting tagged, this saw the Sarries score five unanswered tries before Withycombe could respond. This response came from Jack Greaves and Lewis Alford, as the whole team worked tirelessly to get back on terms. Final score Withycombe 4 Exeter Saracens 9.

Try scorers: Jack Greaves 2, Ebony Mardle1, Lewis Alford 1

The second game would prove to be a much closer affair although it did not start in that manner. An early try from Jack Greaves would be as good as it got in the first half as the Sarries then carried on from where they left off in the first game. This saw the
ball being moved at pace along the line, this resulted in four tries to turn around at 1-4. Two early second half tries saw Sarries move further in front, however this really seemed to spur Withies into life. And the comeback was on. Two tries from Jack Greaves and one from Jaydan Marles bought the teams close, and as legs got tired Withycombe sensed their chance and began to overrun the Sarries. Another try from Lewis Alford got them within one but try as they might they could not cross the Sarries line again. Final score Withycombe 5 Exeter Saracens 6

Try scorers: Jack Greaves 3, Jaydan Marles 1, Lewis Alford 1

Withycombe U9s away v Exeter Saracens on Sunday 4th March 2012

L 4 - 0 (Whirlwinds) | L 7 - 1 (Warriors)

Withycombe U9s travelled into Exeter with two full sides to take on a single Sarries squad in two games on a very wide but short pitch.

The Whirlwinds took to the field first and the opening exchanges were frantic with both sides tackling and rucking well. The sizeable Sarries opposition pressured but the boys held firm for longer periods, making useful ground when in possession with Matthew Rye, Will Cornish and Matthew Edworthy all notable in carrying the ball forward into contact. Continued home pressure led to a HT score 2 : 0 to Sarries

The second period continued in much the same vain with Withy making good attacking breaks that were countered by competent Sarries tackling. Withy defended well putting in equally good tackling and securing well won ball at the breakdown. Despite all the good play Sarries ran in a couple more to produce a 4 nil win.

Another good all round competent performance from the Whirlwinds who worked very hard to keep the score line down despite their own numerous attacks that were defended well by the home side. Withy didn’t make best use of the wide pitch, preferring run the ball up the middle into contact rather than shipping out to the flanks.

Man of the Match: Ben Wilkinson for great tackling and strong running

The Warriors were up next and they commenced gamefully and did well to keep the strong home side at bay with plenty of good tackling and rucking. Withy defence held firm for the first quarter with Eddie Warlow and Alex Wolsey amongst others working hard until sustained Sarries pressure was awarded with two tries in succession. The Warriors countered strongly from each restart and a good team move from a ruck with a couple of quick passes put Will Cooper away into the left corner, outrunning the home defence. HT 3 : 1 Sarries

The continued home pressure began to take its toll in the second half as Withy repeatedly lost possession through strong counter rucking despite Jayden Gore putting in several strong attacking runs to break the Sarries line. Ultimately the home side dominated with a further 4 tries. FT 7 : 1

Try Score: Will Cooper (1)
Man of the Match : Tom Humphry for good strength in possession.

Withycombe U10s away v Exeter Saracens on Sunday 4th March 2012

W 55 - 5  | D 25 - 25

It was a great turn out for the Withy under 10s who visited Exeter Sarries on a cold wet and windy morning. The coaches were tasked with keeping the 20 boys warm prior to the games with some hard drills. The first game started and within minutes the Withy forwards outpowered the Sarries in a scrum giving Joe Blyth the first try as he picked up and went over. The second came after the backs passed the ball well to send Archie Symons over for the second. Ben Bolwell got onto the score sheet next. Harry Cartwright made a powerful run to pass to Joe Blyth for the next. The next came as a result of fine team work as the forwards drove powerfully to produce excellent ball for the backs to pass out wide for Finley Frazer to score. Next, Archie scored his second Followed by Jason Farrant to score after a good break from Lukas White. Joe then scored his third. From a penalty set move Ben Bolwell jinked his way over, followed by Harvey Tucker to score his first try for the team. The last came from Bolwell who seal a good display with his third. Sarries to their credit never gave up and scored at the death.

The second was a much closer game. It took a while for the Withies to get into the game a little cold from the wait. With Sarries scoring first. Josh Farr opened Withies scoring followed soon after by Alex Waiton. Sarries scored their second straight from the restart to level the scores. Harry Cartwright made a good run to pass to Josh Arbury for a well taken try. Again Sarries scored directly from the restart and again after they turned the ball over. Jake Yarwood made an excellent side stepping run to level the scores. Sarries hit back again with Josh Arbry scoring to level the scores after a fine solo effort.

Withycombe U7s at home v Honiton on Sunday 26th February 2012

W 8 - 5 | W 7 - 6

With the welcoming sunshine Withycombe played host to Honiton for what proved to be two very entertaining games of Rugby. The drying conditions allowed for a faster flowing game than had been possible recently, and with Honiton being very well drilled and effective passers of the ball all was set for an enthralling encounter. As the first game of the day got under way it was apparent that recent lessons had been learnt by the Withies, as prolonged tagging and pressurised defence saw Honiton pushed back again and again. This lead to two early tries from Jaydan Marles, who was certainly enjoying the faster ground, and one from Ebony Mardle. All three coming on the end of long passages of sustained possession. Honiton came back into the game as the half neared it's end with two tries of their own, before Joe Gosling again showed how to make the most of limited space near the touch line to score in the corner. The teams ended the half at 4-2. Honiton were fastest out of the blocks in the second half and reduced the deficit to one with a well worked try of their own. This though seemed to spur Withycombe into life, and three unanswered tries in six minutes effectively put the game out of Honiton's reach. The first of these saw Chloe Fellows make the most of some hesitant Honiton defending to record her first try for the club. Tries were then exchanged between the sides to bring the game to an end with a final score of Withycombe 8 Honiton 5.

Try scorers: Ebony Mardle 3, Joe Gosling 2, Jaydan Marles 2, Chloe Fellows 1

As the second game got under way it was again Withycombe who looked the brighter and livelier, certainly with respect to the constant tagging and not allowing Honiton any space for their expansive passing. Due reward came in the first two minutes with tries from Jaydan and Jack Greaves, the latter a superb solo effort from deep in his own half to take on the whole Honiton defence. Again Honiton cam back and levelled the scores, before Freddie Burnard show excellent awareness to find himself some space and receive a lovely pass, which he duly finished off with a score. Honiton scored again on the brink of half time to make it 3-3. It was the away side who seized the advantage early in the second half as Withycombe again took the opportunity to give all the youngest players a run out. Their efforts were not in vain as Ebony Mardle added two more scores to give Withycombe the advantage once more. This then lead to some frantic try scoring as as four were shared evenly between the sides. With time running down a Honiton breakaway was stopped from scoring a game levelling score through the magnificent defence of Abigail Cook, whom got the tag cleanly whilst being the last line. The last couple of minutes saw Honiton do most of the attacking, but once again the Withy defence held firm with all players moving as a unit to stop any threats to their line. A real team effort. Final score Withycombe 7 Honiton 6.

Try scorers: Freddie Burnard 2, Ebony Mardle 2, Joe Gosling 1, Jack Greaves 1, Jaydan Marles 1

Man of the Match: Freddie Burnard for excellent support play and once again scoring important tries.

Mention must go to the whole team for their best passing display this season, Tom Pidgeon and Abigail Cook for by far their best games to date and Chloe Fellows for her first for Withycombe. Well done to you all.

Withycombe U8s at home v Honiton on Sunday 26th February 2012

W 11 - 9 | 15 - 8

Withycombe U8`s welcomed Honiton at Raleigh Park and ran out 11-9 winners in a very tight first game. Harry Bennett led the way with a four try burst and there was also a hat-trick for Charlie Passmore. Sam Skinner, James Griffin and Alfie Gillard weighed in with a try a piece but it was Ollie Hempstead who ran the length of the pitch evading would be taggers to score the try of the match.

The second match was more of a margin with Withy winning 15-8. Harry Bennett and Charlie Passmore scored four tries each and there was a brace from Paddy McGuinness and Sam Skinner. The other scores coming from Alfie Gillard, James Griffin and Joseph Bowden. Withys were lucky having a large squad, making changes at will, but although Honiton only had eight players, some outstanding running and support play from them kept withy at bay, making the score line closer than it suggests. Direct running and superb tagging by Harry Williams was a delight o see, but the man of the match award went to Joseph Bowden, who capped a fine match performance with two tries

Withycombe U9s at home v Honiton on Sunday 26th February 2012

W 7 - 4 | 8 - 2

With some players rested Withy fielded a single squad (Warriors) to play in two well competed games against a single team squad travelling from Honiton.

Honiton opened strongly and struck first after counter rucking Withy off their own ball to send in a runner down the right flank. Withycombe responded well concentrating on tackling and good support in the loose. Will Cooper made a good break from well in side the Withy half to level the scores. Despite good tackling Honiton again countered. This had the effect of galvanising the Withy boys into concentrated play in all areas. Jayden Gore soon levelled from a trademark bustling run punching holes in the visitors defence, he was unlucky not to have added a second score after running the length of the pitch only to be bowled into touch just short of the line. A third try followed from Will Cooper, making another good break following well recycled ball.
HT 3 : 2
Honiton came out strongly again in the second half and soon added a further two tries to take the lead. The boys fought back well showing great character, Tom Real ran in a good try after ripping the ball from inside his own half, Will Cooper at scrum half on the Honiton line took route 1 to get his third of the day. Further sustained pressure on the visitors line saw Eddie Warlow cross for a touch down. Tom Humphry finished the job off after good work from Matthew Edworthy to make the final score, a deserved 7 : 4 to Withy.

Try Scorers: Will Cooper 3, Jayden Gore 1, Tom Real 1, Eddy Warlow 1, Tom Humphry 1
Man of the match: Joe Graham for a great game in all departments working hard up front

Withycombe kept the momentum going in the second game and were soon 2 up from Ben Wilkinson running the first straight in from the first start of play, a second soon followed linking well after great work from Joe Graham's strong possession. Joe Graham then got his reward, landing his own try after making another great break. With the team working hard and doing the basics well, Tom Humphry notched up his second of the day again after good work from Matthew Edworthy.
HT 4:0
More of the same concentrated good work in the second half saw Will Cooper run wide to score from a breakdown. Max Rickards at scrum half worked well and add a further try after a darting run. Jayden Gore continued to make good breaks sending in Will Cooper in support for another sprint for the line. Honiton battled tirelessly to score two well deserved tries in the second half. Jayden Gore then got his second of the day picking up well from a ruck to score in the right corner after a period of Withy pressure.

Try Scorers: Ben Wilkinson 2, Joe Graham 1, Will Cooper 2, Max Rickards 1, Jayden Gore 1
Man of the match: Max Rickards for great work at Scrum Half

Withycombe U10s at home v Honiton on Sunday 26th February 2012

W 35 - 0 | L 15 - 20

It was a fantastic sunny Sunday morning and spring was in the Withy under 10's step against a much improved Honiton team. From the beginning of the first game it was evident that Withy were the stronger in the scrum and mauls putting Honiton onto the back foot. It was no surprise that the first try came from a scrum, the Withy front row pushed Honiton back to give scrum half Joe Blyth the perfect platform to pick up and go over to score. Honiton were now having to commit more and more players to the mauls so when Ben Bolwell came out of a maul on there side with the ball was able to run the whole length of the pitch with no defenders to beat for Withies second. Archie Symons scored the third soon after and Josh Arbury the fourth after another strong scrumage. The fifth came after Josh again made a fine burst down the touch line and as two Honiton players tackled him he passed the ball inside for Ben Bolwell to score. Jason Farrant score the next reward for another fine display from the hard working forward. The final score was a fine team effort with Josh Arbury making a break to pass to Joe Blyth who after a strong run was tackled a few feet short with Ben Bolwell in support again to pick up and dive over for his third try. This was a great team effort with the ball retention and passing much improved from the last two matches.

The second match was a much closer game with Honiton shading the win by 15-20. Withies again were strong in the scrum but allowed Honiton to slow down and rob much of the ruck ball. There were strong runs from Harry Cartwright and Josh Farr in the forwards. Lucas White made some exciting runs from scrum half and was rewarded with a fine try. Harry Hawkins is gaining in confidence in the centre and scored a fine try after he broke through two tackles. Zac Tucker playing only his second game showed his pace to score his first try for the team I am sure many more will follow. Well done to Honiton who showed great character in the second game with a couple of excellent runners of the ball given the space there reward four good tries.

Withycombe U7s away v Exmouth on Sunday 19th February 2012

W 4 - 6 | W 5 - 7

A bright sunny and crisp morning welcomed derby day, as Withycombe travelled the mile down the road to neighbours Exmouth. Expectation was high for some good games, in the same vein as had been provided earlier in the year, between the two sides. And the supporters would not be disappointed. Game one got off to a flying start from Withycombe, as Jack Greaves went clear of the home defence to score the first of the day. Exmouth then fought back and levelled the scores before the Withy defence really got a hold of the half. Constant defensive pressure did not give Exmouth a chance to get into their game. This allowed the Withycombe attack to go about their business, and with some quality support play and interchanging of positions two more scores were added through Jack and Freddie Burnard. This saw the teams turn around at 1-3. The second half was much more open as the young Withies felt the game was theirs for the taking, Exmouth though are nothing if not tenacious. Tries were exchanged throughout the half, with Curtis Fraser and Lewis Alford again on the score sheet. The latter showing a superb sidestep to wrong foot the Exmouth defence. However try of the half came from Thomas Lawrence, who's sheer perseverance saw him on the end of three phases of play before he eventually he went over for the try. An excellent performance from all involved to see the final score Exmouth 4 Withycombe 6.

Try scorers: Jack Greaves 2, Freddie Burnard 1, Thomas Lawrence 1, Curtis Fraser 1, Lewis Alford 1

The second game of the morning saw Withycombe try something different. With the first half being played by those that will be under 8's next year and the second by those that will still be under 7's. And what a result by all concerned. The first half was an unstoppable tide of black and green towards the Exmouth line as the senior players really cut loose. The defensive pressure was again constant and something that has really improved lately. This lead to some Exmouth errors that were pounced upon by Jack Greaves and Jaydan Marles to open the scoring. Also much improved was the passing and handling, and this was on show for the next two tries, as Joe Gosling was on the end of some flowing rugby to score two very impressive tries for himself. Exmouth looked to fight back and scored themselves, this was short lived as again the Withies found their stride. Lewis Alford scoring in the corner. A brace of tries from Baxter Williams, who was enjoying another fine all round game, then followed. Both of these were the result of some fine passing and use of the available space. Another try from Exmouth saw the teams change ends at 2-7. The second half witnessed all of the youngest Withy players take to the field together for the first time. And despite not quite being able to breach the Exmouth line, all defended stoutly to restrict the more experienced Exmouth side to just three scores. All bodes well for next years under 7's on this evidence. Some fine displays came from Thomas Lawrence, Jamie Thompson, Abigail Cook and Kieran Long. Final score Exmouth 5 Withycombe 7.

Try scorers: Baxter Williams 2, Joe Gosling 1, Jack Greaves 1, Lewis Alford 1, Jaydan Marles 1

Man of the match:  Baxter Williams for an all round superb display with lots of tagging, fine supporting and two very well taken tries.

With both teams having good size squads junior rugby in the area seems to be in a very good state of health.

Withycombe U8s away v Exmouth on Sunday 19th February 2012

W 10 - 12 | W 9 - 11

Withycombe under 8`s make the short trip down the road to take on Exmouth under 8`s on a bright Sunday morning. The match started off at a fast pace and it wasn't long before both teams scored early tries. The support play and tagging of both sets of youngsters was a credit to tag rugby but it was the young withy boys that went in at half time with a slender lead. The second half started just as quick as the first with once again, Charlie Passmore leading the way with four touchdowns. To show we aren't just a one card trick, Harry Bennett showed his eye for the try line with another hat-trick , Followed by a brace from Paddy Mcguinness and singles from Sam Skinner Ollie Hempstead and the ever improving James Griffin to lead Withy to a 12 - 10 win.

The 2nd game got under way and it was again Harry Bennett leading from the front picking up another four tries. Charlie Passmore piped in with three and Paddy Mcguinness again showing superb support play with two tries. Joseph Bowden scored his first try in only his second game. A truly great all round performance from the young withies but special mention must go to Ollie Hempstead who wasn't overawed by bigger opposition and rightly won the man of the match with superb tagging and running . Final result Withies 11 - Exmouth 9.

Withycombe U9s away v Exmouth on Sunday 19th February 2012

L 5 - 2

Withy U9s travelled across town with one squad to play their Exmouth counterparts in a single game.

With the boys attention focused on the local derby the opening exchanges were fiercely competitive. Exmouth managed to retain more of the possession but their efforts were resolutely blocked by superb Withycombe defence. Excellent tackling and rucking were on display from both sides and it was Exmouth who finally broke the deadlock after a period of pressure. With much of the play in the middle third of the pitch each side seemed to cancel out the others attacking efforts. Withycombe concentrated on playing the basics very well, taking the ball into contact going to ground, rucking over and occasionally counter rucking to win back possession against the head.

Exmouth added a further two tries from concentrated pressure, Will Cooper made a fine break away run just before half time only to brought down feet from the line with an outstanding cover tackle.

HT 3 : 0

Withy opened brightly in the second half and this time a great team move finally put Cooper away to outrun the defence. Exmouth countered with a further hard fought two tries. Solid Withy defence kept the home side at bay with numerous counter attacking moves to put Exmouth on their back foot. Jayden Gore’s efforts were finally paid off, following a series of fine breaks, he finally managed to straighten up his running to score a well deserved try from a great period of good Withy pressure.

Final Score 5 : 2

Scorers: Will Cooper 1, Jayden Gore 1

Men of the Match: Matthew Rye for great strength in possession, aggressively ripping and keeping hold of the ball at all times and Jayden Gore for his numerous running breaks to punch holes into Exmouth’s defence

Despite the score this was probably Withies most accomplished performance to date, with the boys concentrating from the off, each one of them working hard in all areas of the game.

Withycombe U7s at home v Kingsbridge on Sunday 12th February 2012

L 2 - 9 | D 7 - 7

The games were played on a very heavy pitch against a Kingsbridge side that are without doubt the best team the young Withies have come across this year. From the start it became clear the visitors were on top and although Withycombe took the lead through Joe Gosling, it was Kingsbridge who scored the next three. Jaydan Marles then scored to reduce the margin before Kingsbridge again scored three unanswered tries through some superb team play and quality running. The second half was a much better display from the young Withies restricting the visitors to three more scores. Unfortunately despite their very best efforts Withycombe could not cross the line themselves as Kingsbridge defended very well to seal the game. Final score Withycombe 2 Kingsbridge 9.

Try scorers: Joe Gosling 1, Jaydan Marles 1

Game two was to be a very different game and saw the young Withies play to their new motto, and produce a superb performance from the first whistle. Withycombe's attacking play was much sharper and the support play ever present with no player finding themselves isolated in attack. This resulted in Jaydan Marles and Tom Waiton crossing to change the teams around at 2-3 to Kingsbridge. The second half saw this youngest Withycombe team produce their best ten minutes of the season. Tries were exchanged throughout the half with Ebony, Lewis and Baxter all once again gracing the score sheet. This game will be remembered for an excellent team effort that saw all players produce excellent rugby in very difficult conditions. Final score Withycombe 7 Kingsbridge 7

Try scorers: Jaydan Marles 3, Tom Waiton 1, Ebony Mardle 1, Lewis Alford 1, Baxter Wiliams 1.

Man of Match: Jaydan Marles, exceptional effort in attack and defence including one length of the pitch run to chase down an attacker and get the tag.

Mentions to Chloe Lewis making her debut, lots of good times to come. Welcome back Thomas Lawrence, great performance now you are over that broken arm. Also to Ebony Mardle and Joe Gosling who put in a shift despite both feeling poorly. As we in the under 7's say,

"If you do not give up......you CANNOT fail".

Withycombe U8s at home v Kingsbridge on Sunday 12th February 2012

D 5 - 5 | D 5 - 5

Wthycombe U8`s welcomed Kingsbridge to Raleigh Park on a cold day and both teams produced two games of excellent tag rugby.

Game one saw Sam Skinner burst through several tacklers to score the first try . Back came Kingsbridge to level the scores and this was the way the match went ending 5 tries each. James Griffin put in a last ditch tag to prevent Kingsbridge winning at the end.

Try scorers: Sam Skinner 1, Charlie Passmore 2, James Griffin 1, Alfie Gillard 1

Game two started as quickly as the first with excellent rugby being displayed by both sides on a very heavy pitch. New boy Joseph Bowden showed great promise with excellent running and tagging and was unlucky not to score on his debut. With four regulars missing and hands becoming increasingly colder, the boys dug deep and it was Man of the Match James Griffin who led the way with two tries. Great running and support led to a try for Paddy McGuinness and and there were further scores by Alfie Gillard and Sam Skinner. However , the young Withy boys couldn't pull away and some sloppy mis-tagging allowed the quick Kingsbridge boys back in and this game again finished 5 tries apiece. A very entertaining game well refereed by the Kings coach and two draws was a fair outcome by two good sides. Well done Boys

Try scorers: Sam Skinner 1, Paddy McGuinness 1, James Griffin 2, Alfie Gillard 1
Man of the Match: James Griffin

Withycombe U9s at home v Kingsbridge on Sunday 12th February 2012

L 1 - 5 | D 3 - 3

No Withy Warriors or Whirlwinds this week, just a single 12 man squad to take on visitors from Kingsbridge in two games on a very muddy playing surface following a mid morning thaw.

Game 1
Kingsbridge dominated right from the start running in a very quick first try. All Kings pressure during the first part of the half with the Withy boys well and truly on their back foot, succumbing to repeated lost possession through poor handling and counter rucking. The half ended with Withycombe eventually finding themselves landing a well worked team effort try from a restart.
HT 1 - 3 to Kingsbridge
Withy continued to pressure the visitors from the start of the second period but were up against a well drilled side that tackled well. Good Withy defence kept the score down to only 2 more to Kings. Final Score 1 - 5

Try Scorer: Will Jones – good run following strong team work
Man of the Match: Will Cornish for a good all round effort for consistently making ground and taking the ball into contact

Game 2
Kingsbridge continued to dominate in the first period running in 2 tries to nil, despite good Withy pressure and developing play. A good talking to at HT then saw a resurgent Withy fly into Kingsbridge. Ben Wilkinson ran in a trade mark try from restart. Good period of sustained pressure saw the Withy boys camped in Kings half launching a series of attacks that were well defended. A set piece just back from the Kings line saw Will Cooper at scrum half opt for a dart down the blind side to make it 2 all. More continued good play from the boys saw repeated rucking and mauling to edge ever closer to the visitors line with Tom Humphry showing great strength to land a very well deserved try to take the lead. A strong Kingsbridge side fought back well to level a tough but enjoyable game, with some encouraging play and pride salvaged by the hosts.

Try Scorer: Ben Wikinson 1, Will Cooper 1, Tom Humphry 1
Man of the Match: Tom Humphry for repeatedly crashing into contact and keeping possession

Withycombe U7s at home v Teignmouth on Sunday 5th February 2012

W 6 - 5 | W 8 - 7

Withycombe under 7's entertained Teignmouth last week on a bright morning, however the conditions under foot were very heavy from the overnight rain. Due to being short of numbers Curtis Fraser very sportingly agreed to play for Teignmouth during the games. The first game started very brightly for the home side who took the lead through Jamie Thompson who scored his first Withycombe try after some excellent support play from the whole team. Tries were then exchanged between the sides with Jaydan Marles and Jack Greaves crossing for the young Withies. The teams turned round at 3-3. The second half was equally as close, with some excellent phases of play from both sides. Withycombe were really getting to grips with the Teignmouth attacking with some brilliant tagging and good awareness of space and the touchline. This helped to contain Teignmouth to just two scores in the half, and with Withycombe scoring through the ever willing Joe Gosling, always improving Jaydan and ever reliable Jack it bought about a well deserved result of Withycombe 6 Teignmouth 5.

Try scorers: Jaydan Marles 2, Jack Greaves 2, Joe Gosling 1, Jamie Thompson 1

The second game got under way and it was apparent that legs on both sides were getting tired due to the heavy pitch. Again Withycombe took the lead with Jack Greaves and Joe Gosling crossing the line twice each. Teignmouth however came back strong whenever they were down and the halftime score saw the teams level at 4-4. The start of the second half proved to be the turning point of the match as Withycombe ran in four unanswered tries with Freddie Burnard and Lewis Alford adding their names to the scoresheet, before Joe Gosling once again showed all how to finished as he raced clear down the line to leave the Teignmouth defence stranded for what proved to be the game winning try. With a lead the coaches took the chance to try various new combinations with a view to forthcoming games. This period also saw a debut handed to Tyler Gover who acquitted himself very well. Teignmouth did close the gap, but the result was never in any serious danger. Final score Withycombe 8 Teignmouth 7.

Try scorers: Jack Greaves 3, Joe Gosling 3, Freddie Burnard 1, Lewis Alford 1

Man of the match: Jamie Thompson, who after scoring his first try was tenacious in the tackle and who is visibly improving week after week.

Special mention must also go to Curtis Fraser who whilst playing for Teignmouth, gave absolutely everything and stopped many a Withycombe attack. Very well done an we will be pleased to have you back on our side next week.

The coaches were especially pleased with these performances. As well as missing several players, the team are becoming hard to score against and are really supporting each other brilliantly in attack.

Withycombe U8s at home v Teignmouth on Sunday 5th February 2012

W 7 -  6 | L 4 - 7

Withycombe hosted Teignmouth on a cold winter day and in the first game carried on their fine form against really tough opposition to come away the winners. Great team play and great runs in a back and forth game led to Withycombe snatching victory just at the end. Keiran Davies, James Griffin and Alfie Gillard all played their part with great runs into the oppositions end of the pitch.

Try Scorers: Charlie Passmore 3, Alfie Gillard 2, Harry Bennett 1, Paddy McGuinness 1

In only their first loss of the season Withycombe seem to lose their way with small errors creeping in. This gave the visitors numerous chances to score and build a lead. Despite superb tagging form Man of the Match Erin Asselman, Withycombe struggled to convert chances and it was a lesson they will go away and build on moving into the back end of the season.

Try Scorers: Erin Asselman 1, Harry Williams 1, Paddy McGuinness 1, Alfie Gillard 1

Withycombe U9s away v Teignmouth on Sunday 5th February 2012

W 1 - 5 (Whirlwinds) | W 1 - 8 (Warriors)

Withies travelled around the Exe Estuary in good numbers to take on Teignmouth on a cold bright Feb Sunday morning. Teignmouth sportingly agreed to play 2 games against the larger travelling Withycombe squad.

The Whirlwinds took the field first in what proved to be a very even opening exchange with both sides rucking and tackling well. Ben Wilkinson finally broke the deadlock with some strong running following a period of sustained Withy pressure which saw him in the thick of the tackling. Teigns countered forcefully and camped out in the Withy half for much of the first period. Solid defence kept the home side at bay, good handling from a set piece put Tom Real away for a fine breakaway try, running the length of the pitch, shrugging off a couple of tackle attempts. HT 1 : 2 to Whirlwinds

The second half continued in much the same vain with Teignmouth exerting themselves through strong mauling with Withy absorbing the pressure with great cover tackling. Turn over ball allowed Withy to break free against the run of play with Will Jones notable in attack, offloading well to allow a couple of tries to be scored. Final Score 1: 5 to Whirlwinds

Try Scorers: Ben Wilkinson 1, Tom Real 3, Will Cornish 1
Man of the Match: Tom Real for 3 outstanding tries and good tackling

A good all round hard working effort from the boys to beat solid opposition who retained the ball well for long periods - great Withy teamwork and very solid defence.

The second game saw the Warriors take on the same opposition after a short break. With lessons learnt from the first match the boys avoided trying to compete too much in the maul area, preferring to go to ground, recycling well all making for a much more open encounter. The returning Max Rickards at scrum half put in some darting runs from well rucked ball, putting away Will Cooper for a couple of good breaks to score as well as releasing Matthew Edworthy to score form a strong run from the base of a scrum. HT 0 : 3 to Warriors

The concentrated hard work continued into the second half with solid defence and improving retention at the break down with players stepping over the ball to ruck and block out the ever dangerous Teignmouth on the counter attack. With the boys holding their position and shape, disciplined hard work was rewarded by five very well worked tries following phases of excellent rugby. Final Score 1 : 8 to Warriors

Try Scorers: Will Cooper 3, Tom Humphry 2, Matthew Edworthy 1, Joe Graham 1, Jayden Gore 1
Men of the Match: Matthew Edworthy for his usual impressive tackling, Joe Graham for fantastic all round involvement playing up front.

A very encouraging display showing the benefit of concentrating on the basics coupled with good positional play secured this great team victory.

Withycombe U7s away v Exeter Chiefs on Sunday 30th January 2012

W 7 - 8 | L 11 - 6

Withycombe under 7s made the short trip to Sandy Park full of hope and enthusiasm on a bitterly cold morning to face a talented Exeter Chiefs side brimming with confidence being on the artificial surface. The first game was played at a terrific pace, with fast flowing rugby and excellent passing and tagging. Withycombe took the early initiative through a Jack Greaves try, this was however soon overturned as Exeter fought back with three unanswered tries to take a two try lead. The young Withies were not to be overrun and some tremendous team play saw tries from Ebony Mardle and Joe Gosling to turn around at 3 - 3. The beginning of the second half was the Curtis Fraser show as after Exeter scored twice, he ran three tries without reply showing a slight of hand and fleet of foot not seen from Curtis so far this season. Exeter came back strongly and only some very solid tagging prevented them taking the lead. They did gain parity as tries were exchanged, and then with the last play of the game Joe Gosling danced past virtually all Chiefs defenders to score a length of the pitch try to seal the win for Withycombe. Final score Exeter Chiefs 7 Withycombe 8.

Try scorers Curtis Fraser 3, Jack Greaves 2, Joe Gosling 2, Ebony Mardle 1

Game two saw a whole new Chiefs team and no less effort from the young Withies even with very tired legs. Tries were scored evenly between the two sides with Jaydan Marles continuing his excellent good form. The defences were on top for most of the first half, with Withycombe coming to grips with all moving together and using the touchline as an extra defender on numerous occasions. Half time arrived with the scores level at 4-4. The second saw the draining surface and cold start to take their toll as Exeter were very much on top scoring three early tries. However the under 7's do not give up easily and responded through Freddie Burnard and Jack Greaves. This was as close as the young Withies would get as Exeter scored four tries in the last couple of minutes, including a superb solo run after collecting the ball from the floor. Final score Exeter Chiefs 11 Withycombe 6.

Try scorers. Jaydan Marles 2, Jack Greaves 2, Joe Gosling 1, Freddie Burnard 1.

Man of the match went to Curtis Fraser for a fantastic display running, tagging, support play and all round effort. Mention to all the players for good commitment in difficult conditions and once again showing a very good team and work ethic.

Withycombe U9s away v Exeter Chiefs on Sunday 30th January 2012

L 9 - 0 | L 8 - 3

Withy U9s travelled to a very cold Sandy Park to play the Chiefs.

Game 1 saw the Warriors take to the Rubber Crumb pitch to take on sizeable opposition. With the Chiefs fielding a number of very big players this was never going to be an easy ride for the Withy lads. A succession of early tries saw the Chiefs centre their game on the resident “bulldozers” who were just too big to handle with their weight and power ploughing through a valiant defence. That said the boys stuck to their game heroically and did all the basics very well, taking the ball into contact and presenting back. Unfortunately the Warriors were never going to be a match to the sheer size, bulk and momentum and were often rucked off their own ball to lose limited possession.

To their immense credit the Withy boys never gave up and tackled and probed hard against capable opposition. The first half closed with the Warriors gradually settling the game down, displaying stern defence and some useful running breaks, making the Chiefs work for everything.

An injury to Eddie Warlow closed the game at HT whilst he awaited treatment on the pitch. He’s thankfully made a good recovery. Final Score 9 - 0 to Chiefs

Man of the Match – Captain for the day, Jake Diprose, for a great all round effort and never giving up.

The second game thankfully saw a down sizing of the opposition much to the Whirlwinds relief ! The Chiefs still proved very tough opposition and kept Withies penned in for much of the first half despite some very solid defensive work and encouraging running breaks. HT score 4 - 0 to Chiefs.

The Whirlwinds dug deep and battled for every inch in the second half, matching the Chiefs in a hard bitten but absorbing encounter. Bolstered by a few tactical substitutions the Whirlwinds clawed their way back into the second half with three excellent tries from a fantastic team effort. Similar to the first game, despite often severe pressure the boys concentrated and did the basics very well, managing to hold on to possession, with good rucking/mauling and presenting, followed by good inter passing and offloading in the tackle to make ground. Final Score 8 - 3 to Chiefs.

Try Scorers: Matthew Rye 1, from great team effort, Will Jones 2, also from great team work

Man of the Match: Will Jones – For great ripping of the ball, and all round hard work

A tough but valuable encounter for the Withy lads, who despite the odds (including to be fair some un penalised infringement) managed to play encouraging phases of rugby in all areas. Well done to the Exeter Chiefs though, who certainly provided a character building experience !

Withycombe U10s away v Exeter Chiefs on Sunday 30th January 2012

W 25 - 5 | D 25 - 25

Withycombe under 10s visited the home of premiership rugby side Exeter Chiefs with their entire squad available for the first time this season. The morning saw two matches played with Withycombe winning the first encounter and drawing the second match. Both matches were played on the artificial crumb that made for two exciting fast flowing games that left both sets of supporters thoroughly entertained.

Withycombe 25 Exeter Chiefs 5
The first match was nip and tuck for the first quarter of the game with neither side being able to find their way through the well organised defences. The first try came after ten minutes of sustained pressure from the home side, which meant that this Withycombe team had conceded a try for the first time in three matches.
The score seem to galvanise the Withycombe team who started to press the home side on every occasion that they had the ball. This resulted in the Chief’s being forced into errors that in turn resulted in turnover ball that Withycombe started to make good use of, especially the dynamo that is Ben Bolwell, who ended up with a try hat trick for his endeavours.
Once again Jason Farrant got himself on the score sheet with a brace of tries but it was by no means a two man performance as the whole squad of eleven players contributed in a fine team performance.

Withycombe 25 Exeter Chiefs 25
The players in the second match of the morning carried on where their colleagues had left off producing arguably the best team performance of the season so far from any of the under 10s sides.
The foundations were laid by the powerful forward play of the two Josh’s Arbury and Farr respectively, who used their strength to good effect. With Josh Arbury capping a good morning’s work scoring for the second match in a row.
The ever dangerous Lucas White once again benefited from the quality ball supplied to him by the forwards showing great pace to end up with his own try hat trick. The scoring was completed by Harry Rowland who is coming in to his own as an attacking force with each game that he plays.
The defensive lines were once again led by Adam Littlejohn in the forwards and Kyle Perry in the back line, which kept the very dangerous home side down to only five tries thus securing a well deserved draw.

Withycombe U7s away v Sidmouth on Sunday 22nd January 2012

D 4 - 4 | D 6 - 6

Withycombe under 7s made the trip to face Sidmouth on the back of tremendous results against Brixham the week before. Last time the two sides met it was a very tight encounter, and so it would prove to be again. Game one started in a very cagey manner with both defences playing superbly and being well on top for long periods. Only a well worked try for Joe Gosling separated the team at half time. Sidmouth got the better start after the interval and scored three unanswered tries. The young Withies then showed their resolve to score three of their own to take the lead with only seconds left. However straight from the restart, a large gap along the line allowed Sidmouth to level up the scores. Final score Sidmouth 4 Withycombe 4.

Try scorers: Joe Gosling 1, Jaydan Marles 1, Jack Greaves 1, Ebony Mardle 1

The second game was an equally tight affair, the first half saw some superb pressure from the Withycombe defence to turn the ball over several times, and most pleasingly this pressure was turned into scores, as at the turnaround it was 2 - 4 to Withycombe. The second half seemed to be a mirror image of the first as Sidmouth got the better of the defensive battle and pushed Withycombe back constantly and managed to score four to the Withies two to leave the final score at Sidmouth 6 Withycombe 6.

Coaches from both teams were delighted with the all round effort from both sets of players, and the attitude displayed from all players. It would seem there will be many more close games from these sets of players for many years to come.

Try scorers: Jaydan Marles 3, Jack Greaves 2, Ebony Mardle 1.

Man of the match went to Jaydan Marles for superb running and four tries on the day.

Try Scorers: Charlie Passmore 1, Erin Asselman 2

Man of the Match: James Griffin was solid in attack in games of low scores due to great defending by both sides it took a really special effort by players like James to edge ahead and leave Withycombe with a still unbeaten record this season

Withycombe U9s at home v Sidmouth on Sunday 22nd January 2012

L 1 - 7 | W 5 - 4

This week saw the unleashing on the world of junior rugby the newly named Withycombe Warriors and Withycombe Whirlwinds, the two playing sides of the U9s squad.

Withy Warriors were first up against very well drilled visitors from Sidmouth. Sidmouth dominated from the start keeping the Warriors in their own half for much of the first period. The boys defended bravely, with many good tackles flying in along with some good work at the break down. However Sidmouth pressure was almost constant, with forceful rucking and counter rucking on show. With ball hand Sid routinely shipped it wide stretching the Withy defence. Any attempts at counter attacking were quickly snuffed out by very competent visitor tackling. The usual Withy runners often found themselves isolated and then prey to effective Sidmouth counter rucking to regain possession. The Warrior’s enjoyed some time in Sidmouth’s half and were rewarded with a very hard won try following great all round team work just before the break.
HT 1 : 3 to Sidmouth

The second half followed a similar pattern with Sidmouth superior in all areas despite some dogged Withy defence. The boys need to support each other more and get to the breakdown in numbers to secure their own ball then get it moving forward through hands from deep.
Final Score 1 : 7 to Sidmouth

Try Scorers: Tom Humphrys and Jake Diprose – shared a single try that was scrabbled over the line with joint hands on it.
Man of the Match: Will Cooper for great tackling and all round effort

The second game saw the Withy Whirlwinds engage in a much more closely fought affair. Withy took an early lead after a great start pushing the Sidmouth boys on to their back feet. Withy were able to match Sidmouth in tackling and at the breakdown, also then moving the ball through hands when in possession to gain ground. Sidmouth worked hard to get themselves back in the game, with nothing to really choose between the sides at the break
HT 3 : 3
The second period continued at a frantic pace with both sides slugging out in the middle third of the pitch with some good rugby on show. Each side endeavoured to get their respective runners away - who were then often mown down by aggressive cover tackling. Both teams demonstrated ability to present and recycle their own ball at the ruck before starting new phases, Withy pressure finally edged with two well worked tries that saw Will Jones run in from deep, following good pressure by all.
Final Score 5 : 4 to Withy Whirlwinds

Try Scorers: Ben Wilkinson 1, trade mark sprint for the line, Matthew Rye 1, strong in possession, Matthew Edworthy 1, solid support on opposition try line and Will Jones 2, as above

Man of the Match: Whole team for a fantastic all round effort against tough opposition.

In Summary - Honours shared in a great avert for local U9s rugby.

Withycombe U10s at home v Sidmouth on Sunday 22nd January 2012

W 15 - 0 | W 25 - 10

Withycombe were once again able to field two completely different sides for the visit of local rivals Sidmouth. The games were closely fought out by two evenly matched squads with Exmouth coming out on top in both.

Withycombe 15 Sidmouth 0
The first match was played between the more experienced players from each of the squads. There was nothing between the opposing sides with both sides’ well organised defences nullifying their opponents attacking endeavours.

Sidmouth were particularly strong in and around the contact area where they were able to hold the home side’s players up stopping them going to ground to produce quick ruck ball for their backs. But when they did secure ball of their own to attack the home side they came up against a resolute and the miserly Withycombe defence that once again went through a game without conceding a try.

On one of the only occasions that Withycombe did produce quick ball in the first half Oscar Moyle ran a fantastic line evading would be defenders to score a well taken try.

Withycombe scored two tries in the second half through the ever industrious Ben Bolwell who found the smallest of gaps in Sidmouth’s defence to squeeze through. He was joined on the score sheet by Jason Farrant who bludgeoned his own gap through the defensive line.

Withycombe 25 Sidmouth 10
Withycombe also ran out winners by three clear tries in the second game of the morning. Whereas the first game was more about stopping opponents from playing, the second game was played at a much higher tempo with both sides producing pulsating attacking rugby that entertained both sets of supporters.

Lucas White was once again the arch finisher scoring a try hat trick for the home side. But not too far behind in the scoring stakes was the ever improving Alex Waiton who is revelling in the space that he finds himself in now that he is playing in the back line, scoring a brace of tries to complete the scoring for Withycombe.

Withycombe U7s V Brixham on 15th January 2012

Under 7's net the Fishermen
W 7 - 6 | W 8 - 5

On a very cold and blustery morning Withycombe welcomed a strong and well disciplined Brixham side to Raleigh Park. The conditions made predicting the games, and who would deal best with them, a tough choice. As game one got under way the Withy defence was caught cold as Brixham ran in a try direct from the start. This was soon reciprocated as Withycombe did exactly the same through Jack Greaves. Both teams then tightened up defensively and play was largely in the middle of the field. Brixham then took the lead before some direct running and swift passing Withycombe to score four more tries in the half to Brixhams one. Half time saw the change of ends at 5-3 to Withycombe. Pleasingly there were five different scorers in the Withy ranks. The second half was even tighter than the first as Brixham scored two unanswered tries to tie the game at five each. Tries were then swapped before Ebony Mardle claimed the decider after a good team move that saw the ball retained through nine phases. Final score Withycombe 7 Brixham 6.

Try scorers: Jack Greaves 2, Ebony Mardle 2, Jaydan Marles 1, Joe Gosling 1, Tom Waiton 1

The second game of the morning saw the young Withies put in a sterling performance with recent lessons starting to be learnt, and early tries from Ebony and Lewis saw them take charge of the game. Brixham did respond and scored themselves twice with some good lines being ran from deep. From this point on Withycombe began to defend like demons pushing Brixham deeper and deeper, so much so that when the ball was spilled behind the Brixham line Ebony just had to push it down to score. This seemed to take the wind out of Brixhams sails and Withycombe pushed forward to score three unanswered scores and effectively put the game to bed. In the last moments scores were exchanged for the final score to be Withycombe 8 Brixham 5.

Try scorers: Jack Greaves 3, Ebony Mardle 2, Jaydan Marles 1,  Lewis Alford 1
Man of the Match: Joe Gosling for an excellent team performance, superb tagging and non stop effort in defence.

Given the weather conditions both teams put on a show of fantastic rugby, with the passing mainly going to hand and the tagging and all round effort being exceptional. Both encounters were played in the very best traditions of the game and in a way that we all hope to see the game played. A very good mornings rugby.

Withycombe U9s away to Brixham on Sunday 15th January 2012

W 1 - 9 | W 2 - 13

Maintaining the same sides from the previous week, Withy U9s travelled around Torbay to take on Brixham.

Game 1: Ben Wilkinson opened the scoring straight from the KO with a good run to split open the home defence.
From then on the boys fired straight into the sizeable opposition, displaying aggressive and determined rucking following the usual high standard of tackling.

Recycled ball was then used to good effect to send in the runners with Will Cornish notable in making good breaks to then link well and also score a storming try. With their own ball Brixham exerted periods of pressure on the Withy lines, only to be faced with stern defence to lose turn over ball. HT 5 nil to Withy

The second half was a closer affair with Brixham coming back much more into the game. Withies absorbed the pressure which again saw great recycling from the breakdown to send in the runners often against the run of play to score a further 4 tries to Brixham's reply of 1 well deserved effort. Well done to Ben Wilkinson for running in 6 long range efforts. Matthew Rye ran the length of the pitch in both halves to score two fine tries.

Try Scorers: Ben Wilkinson 6, Will Cornish 1, Matthew Rye 2
Man of the Match: Alex Wolsey for a great all round effort, noticeable in every area of play, well deserved award.

Game 2: The team that suffered badly the previous week revived their fortunes in no uncertain terms through a much improved all round display tackling and rucking.
The first half was a very one sided affair with Withy dominating in all areas. As in the first game the boys controlled play and withstood any opposition attacks to repeatedly secure turn over ball. With ball in hand they were able to launch a series of blistering attacks with Will Cooper and Tom Real running in 3 good efforts a piece, both displaying a good change of step to repeatedly wrong foot Brixham. HT 8 nil to Withy

Again as in the first game Brixham rallied and upped their again which saw Withy working well in defence to withstand long periods of pressure. This good work paid off on a number of occasions with the boys winning back well deserved ball to push back up the pitch to score a number of well worked and individual tries. Jayden Gore, Tom Humphry and Joe Graham were all noted for their constant hard work and linking, Sam Diprose scored a good solo effort from a KO.

Try Scorers: Will Cooper 5, Tom Real 3, Jayden Gore 2, Tom Humphry 2, Sam Diprose 1
Man of the Match: Cameron White for a great display of tackling, making some determined breaks to step up his game, well done Cameron.

Withycombe U7s V Topsham on 8th January 2012

L 3 - 5 | L 1 -  5 | L 4 - 6

The first game back in the new year saw the Withies take on a very large, strong and very well organised Topsham squad. Due to their large numbers Topsham were able to field three teams to the one from Withycombe. Game one saw both teams display some excellent rugby with good passes and some strong running. Tries were exchanged at regular intervals between the two before Topsham managed to edge out the young Withies 5-3 at the final whistle.

The complete set of fresh legs were very evident in the second game as this was a more one sided score line, though not the game, in Topsham's favour. Withies only score came from Kieran Long's long distance effort halfway through the first half. And but for some excellent Topsham tagging this game could have been much closer. Final score Withy 1 Topsham 5.

With very tired legs the young Withies agreed to take on one final challenge and play a third game of the morning. This followed the same pattern of the first game with Topsham getting a two try lead only for scores to then be exchanged throughout. An excellent solo effort from Joe Gosling was the high point as he ran from deep in his own half to score. Final score Withy 4 Topsham 6. The coaches were very pleased with the attitude shown in all games but especially the last, as not once did the team look to give in and ran themselves into the ground with vigour. Man of the match went to Lewis for superb tagging and non stop running. Also to be mentioned is Tom Pidgeon for his best game of the year and showing how the game should be played, with a constant smile on his face.

All in all, very glad to get this game out of the way so that the team are back into their rugby after nearly a month out of action. Next week sees Withycombe welcome Brixham for which are sure to be close games again.

Withycombe U8s V Topsham on 8th January 2012

W 10 - 9 | D 5 - 5 | D 7 - 7

Topsham arrived at Withycombe with 3 full teams and Withycombe having 1 team plus a few subs. They played 3 incredibly hard fought matches which again highlighted the high standard of youth Rugby in the southwest area. Withycombe were the victors in the first game narrowly winning by 1 point. In the 2nd and 3rd games it was a incredibly close and a great shows of Withycombe's stamina to face fresh opposition from the huge squad of Topsham. Many times Withycombe were behind but great team play and man of the match qualities from Charlie Passmore and Harry Bennett enabled Withycombe to stay undefeated still this season. A brilliant overall team performance by both clubs with Withycombe looking to remain undefeated as they carry on in to the new year.

Game 1: Withycombe 10 - Topsham 9
Scorers:  Erin Asselman 1, Charlie Passmore 4, Harry bennett 5

Game 2: Withycombe 5 Topsham 5
Scorers: Charlie Passmore 1, Harry Bennett 3, Paddy McGuinness 1

Game 3: Withyconbe 7 - Topsham 7
Scorers: Sam skinner 1, Erin Asselman 2, Paddy McGuinness 1, Charlie Passmore 3

Withycombe U9s V Topsham on 8th January 2012

L 1 - 12 | W 3 - 2

Withycombe U9s entered January with a New Year Resolution to field two balanced teams to play in separate matches against opposition with similar squad sizes to give equal game time to all.

Despite their best efforts the team selected to play in the first match didn’t gel together against well drilled and capable opposition. A lack of pressure and urgency around the breakdown coupled with below par tackling continually allowed Topsham to dominate. Topsham won more possession typically following good counter rucking which allowed them room to ship the ball and run in a hatful of tries in both halves.

On a positive note, the periods of Withy possession did see the boys handle the ball well and exert encouraging pressure play, particularly in the second half but the solid visitors defence continually shut them out.

Try Scorer: Tom Real - a powerful run from a restart

Man of the Match: Jack Coles, a well deserved award for notably stepping up his game and carrying the ball forward into contact.

By contrast Game 2 was a far more balanced affair that saw a close and absorbing game of rugby. A similar level of well drilled visiting opposition were held at bay through ferocious Withy tackling and much better work at the break down. Ben Wilkinson opened the scoring for Withy with a fine break away try down the right flank. With little to separate the sides the score at half time was a 1 a piece.

The game remained very close in the second period, with much of the play alternating in the middle third of the pitch. Withy pressure finally dominated with Thomas Humphry putting in an elusive run to score in the left corner followed by some straight running up the middle from a hard won ruck to see Matthew Rye score the winning try.

Try Scorers: Ben Wilkinson 1, Thomas Humphry 1, Matthew Rye 1

Man of the Match: Matthew Edworthy for excellent tacking throughout with 100% hit rate

Withycombe U10s V Brixham on 11th December 2011

W 35 - 0 | W 35 - 5

Withycombe under 10’s played Brixham in two keenly contested matches last weekend coming out victors in both. The score lines in both matches were emphatic but belie the closeness between the sides. The main difference being that Withycombe used the ball they won to great effect and defended tenaciously when Brixham were in possession.

The first match saw Withycombe score seven tries in total whilst keeping their try line intact. The defensive effort was led by Ollie Leeming whose ferocious tackling kept the visitors behind the game line throughout the match. The tries were shared amongst the back line with Joe Blyth and Finlay Fraser scoring a brace of tries each. Blyth’s efforts both came from close range after good approach work from the forwards with Fraser benefiting from great support running and being on hand to finish off two moves started by the industrious Ben Bolwell.
Jake Yarwood showed great pace outstripping the defence after receiving another fine pass from Bolwell. Bolwell then capped a great performance scoring a fine individual try jinking his way through leaden footed defenders on his way to the line. Ollie Leeming showed what he could also do in attack scoring in the corner after the ball was fed along the whole back line.

In match 2 both Blyth and Bolwell carried on where they left off in the first match scoring a brace of tries each. This time Blyth’s tries were more lung busting efforts both from long range after initially breeching the defensive line. Bolwell showed his terrier like spirit picking up the ball from close range sc
rums and burrowing his way over the white wash.
There was no such burrowing from Josh Farr who once again showed great strength in barging his way over the line to score whilst carrying two would be defenders on his back. This effort from Withycombe’s powerhouse was followed up by a first ever try from the somewhat smaller Finlay Robertson, who was on hand to pick up the loose ball close to the Brixham line after a great run from Alex Weighton. Weighton himself got on the score sheet with a well deserved try that saw him spy a hole in the defensive line and outpace the defence to cap off a very good individual and team performance.

Withycombe U7s away at Exeter Saracens on 4th December 2011

L 6 - 4 | D 7 - 7

Withycombe under 7's made the trip to Exeter Saracens full of enthusiasm for the game and able to field 16 players. After starting strongly in game one with two tries from Ebony Mardle and some strong defending and tagging the teams turned round at half time level at 2-2. The second half was a much more of an interesting affair with the rules somewhat stretched by the home referee, with running without both tags being the order of the day for Saracens, much to the dismay of the Withy players who were hardly missing a tackle. This saw them take advantage to record four scores to Withycombe's two, through Baxter Williams and Jaydan Marles. Final score Saracens 6 Withycombe 4.

Try scorers; Ebony Mardle 2, Baxter Williams and Jaydan Marles 1

After the break Withycombe took the chance to change the team around to ensure every player got a game. Withycombe again came up against some questionable decisions with three tries being chalked off. And when half time arrived the teams were only separated by the odd try in five. 3-2 in Sarries favour. It was at this point that the 'we do not give up' attitude that serves this team so well came into play. Withies were much more fluent and always looked the most likely to score. Scores from Ebony Mardle, Marles and Williams saw them take a slender lead. This was soon wiped out as three quick tries saw Sarries two up with only minutes left. This could have been more without some superb tagging from Joe Gosling, Curtis Fraser and a sure try saver from Kieran Long. Then came the move of the half as the Withies attacked from deep in their own half and passed the ball through every pair of hands, only for Long to be tagged a yard from the line, with speed of thought and a deft pass to the supporting Marles the Withies found themselves back in the game. And a last minute effort saw Marles score again to bring parity to the game. Final score Saracens 7 Withycombe 7

Try scorers: Jaydan Marles 4, Baxter Williams 2,  Ebony Mardle 1
Man of Match Jaydan Marles for five tries and endless support play.

Withycombe U8s away at Exeter Saracens on 4th December 2011

W 8 - 14 | W 8 - 10

Withycombe travelled to Exeter Saracens for their hardest match of the season so far. A great game which was level until halftime when Withycombe again showed their team commitment and stamina to push until the end to walk away winners. Man of the Match Erin Asselman led the team defensively in the second half making the team work together to turnover Saracens and force errors which Charlie Passmore and Harry Bennett pouncing to score and Bennet scoring 5 alone. Alfie Gillard and James Griffin were solid in the middle making direct runs forward to help further push Saracens back. Coaches on both sides enjoyed a great competitive game which really showcased some local rugby stars of the future.

Try scorers: Harry Bennett 5, Charlie Passmore 3, Erin Asselman 1, Paddy McGuinness 2, James Griffin 1, Alfie Gillard 2

Game 2 was much harder and Withycombe really had to dig deep for a result. Sarcens really took it to Withycombe, in the second half especially, but outstanding defence from Ollie Hempstead and Joe Farmer and strong running by Oliver willis and Charlie Tyler helped the team win. Some amazing passing by both teams with a really stand out pass between Sam skinner and Paddy McGuinness made for exciting watching right until the final whistle.

Try scorers: Harry Bennett 3, Charlie Passmore 3, Paddy McGuinness 2, Alfie Gillard 1, Sam Skinner 1

Withycombe U9s at home to Exeter Saracens on 4th December 2011

L 1 - 4 | 1 - 8

Withys came up against their toughest opponents to date this season when they hosted Exeter Saracens at Raleigh Park on Sunday 4th Dec 2011.

In Game 1 a very well drilled Sarries closed down Withycombe in all areas giving the usual runners very little time and space with ball in hand. That said Withies worked very hard to contain the noticeably larger and taller visitors with determined tacking from all. By half time it was 4 nil to Sarries who were rewarded for their constant pressure despite several Withy attacks that were brought down by very competent tackling and counter rucking.

By contrast the second half was a far more balanced affair with the Withy boys finding their feet and reversing the pressure back onto Sarries and holding them well at the breakdown. Well done to Will Jones for landing the single try of the half after a great team effort to push back the visitors. The game was a tough test, providing a timely lesson from capable opponents. The second half response will hold the Withy boys in good stead for the future.

Try Scorer: Will Jones 1
Man of the Match: Ben Wilkinson for great tackling.

With good numbers provided by both squads a change of personnel took place for Game 2. The match followed a similar pattern with Sarries dominating in the first half to go in 6 nil at the break. Again, the boys should take positives for their hard working defence and occasional well worked attacks.

Like Game 1 the boys dug deep in the second half to contain the stronger visitors by only allowing two scores to a reply of one from new boy Matthew Rye. A much more encouraging half of rugby from Withy with everyone working well.

Try Scorer: Matthew Rye 1
Man of the Match: A very well deserved award to debutant Matthew Rye for a fantastic and very encouraging first game, demonstrating great tackling and strength in all areas.

Withycombe U7s away at Honiton on 27th November 2011

D 7 - 7 | L 7 - 5

The short trip was made to Honiton last week and the Withy youngsters endured a frustrating day as things didn't go their way. The first game was a tense affair with scores being traded in the first half between the two teams, although the Honiton tries were mainly conceded through a lack of Withycombe concentration. Half time saw a 4-4 turnaround. The second half was more of the same as Honiton continued to press and force errors from the Withies. When the Withy youngsters did put some phases together they looked as if they could score at will. However it was not to be, as again unforced errors crept into play and tries were exchanged at regular intervals between the two sides. Final score Honiton 7 Withycombe 7.

The second game saw Withycombe take the chance to play many of the youngest players together for the first time. All acquitted themselves very well under trying conditions. The Honiton defence was extremely well marshalled and hard to break down, and with a largely unchanged team from the first game they were able to take the lead with a couple of well worked tries. Withycombe heads did not drop however and they managed to fight back to a half time of 2-2. After the break Honiton began to dominate as the Withies appeared to run out of steam, and this started to lead to errors creeping in. But again the never give up attitude shown by all Withycombe players did them proud as they continued to battle away much to their credit. With the scores level with only three minutes to go came the game winning try from Honiton, and is was well deserving of winning the game. The ball passed between 5 pairs of hands before a perfectly thrown long pass saw Honiton score in the corner to much deserved applause from all watching. Final score Honiton 7 Withycombe 5.

Man of the Match for Withycombe was Jack Greaves for hid endless running and try scoring.

Withycombe U8s away at Honiton on 27th November 2011

W 3 - 10 | W 5 - 10

On a cold Sunday morning Withycombe travelled to Honiton for a well fought match. Man of the match (game1) Harry Bennett seemed to have eaten 3 shredded wheat as he not only tagged well but scored 6!! Some superb team play with all players being involved in defending and forcing Honiton back and turning the ball over numerous times. Erin Asselman also showed amazing defensive skills in taking every tag to turn the ball over single handily in 1 passage of play.

Try scorers: Harry Bennett 6, Charlie Passmore 2, Paddy McGuinness 1, Erin Asselman 1

In the second game both teams utilised their younger, newer players but the quality was still there for all to see. In a closer game Withycombe players had to push hard to get a result but some outstanding defending by Players like Oliver Willis, Charlie Tyler and Ollie Hempstead helped them on the way. Man of the match(game2) James Griffin really stepped it up, not only taking multiple tags, but scoring 2 as captain. On the attack players like Keiran Davies made bold strong runs forward and Withycombe again came away winners.

Try scorers: Erin Asselman 2, Charlie Passmore 2, James Griffin 2, Harry Bennett 2, Sam Skinner 1, Alfie Gillard 1

Withycombe are still looking for players to strengthen the side, so please get in touch.

Withycombe U9s away at Honiton on 27th November 2011

W 4 - 8

With limited numbers the home side elected to play one game only. A usual good Withy turn out meant that subs were rolled on and off during both halves.

The game started with Honiton dominating possession just inside the Withy half. Hard tackling from Withycombe won turn over ball to send in Tom Real for a fine break away try. A similar pattern emerged from the restart with Honiton pressuring only for Will Cooper to run in a second break away try following good work from Will Jones. Ben Wilkinson quickly followed with his own charge to the home try line to make it 3 nil.

Continued Honiton pressure was finally rewarded, though soon countered by a second from Tom Real after several phases of encouraging Withy attacking play. Thomas Humphrey entered the score sheet just before half time with a hall mark jinking run to split open the Honiton defence.

HT 2 : 5 deserved lead to Withies.

The second half was a much closer affair with Honiton flexing their superior size and muscle despite aggressive Withy defence to hold them at bay. On the counter attack Withy camped out on the Honiton line for a period before well worked rucking allowed the hard working Matthew Edworthy to simply pick up and step over for a touch down. Continued Withy attacking play saw Cooper outpace the Honiton defence to run in a couple more in each corner, again all following encouraging rucking and good inter passing play.

Final Score 4 : 8 to Withies

An enjoyable and absorbing match with periods of dogged defence from both teams, followed by phases of good rugby. A great all round team effort from the U9's boys who all put in a good shift of hard tackling to bring down generally larger opponents.

Try Scorers: Tom Real 2, Ben Wilkinson 1, Will Cooper 3, Thomas Humphrey 1, Matthew Edworthy 1

Men of Match – Eddie Warlow for outstanding tackling, the ever improving Sam Diprose for great running and all round involvement.

Withycombe U10s away at Honiton on 27th November 2011

W 0 - 40 | W 10 - 45

Sunday saw Withycombe make the short trip across East Devon to take on local rivals Honiton where they played two games. Once again Withycombe were able to field two completely different sides with both sides turning in outstanding performances that resulted in two convincing victories.

The player who will grab the headlines from the first match was undoubtedly Lucas White, who scored a total of six tries playing in what was a new position for him at scrum half. But the victory was built around a solid team performance with a powerful display from the forwards led by the two Josh’s, Arbury and Farr respectively, who punched holes at will in the Honiton defence before releasing the ball for White who’s pace and eye for a gap was just too much for the home team to handle.

The remaining two tries were scored by Jack Wastenage who had an outstanding debut in the green and black of Withies.

The second match saw Withycombe score nine tries with the ubiquitous Joe Blyth scoring the first of his three tries as a result of quick ruck ball secured by the forwards. The second try went to Jake Yarwood who was put into space thanks to a superbly timed pass from the impressive Harry Cartwright.

Jason Farrant was next to profit from good approach play this time from Ben Bolwell who made a trade mark break from around the base of the ruck before feeding the ball to Farrant to barge over the line. Oscar Moyle scored the next try after spotting a gap in the visitor’s defence that he seared through without a defender getting a hand on him.

Jake Yarwood became provider for the next try after linking up with Bolwell before feeding the rampaging Jason Farrant to score his second try. Fellow forward Archie Symons was next on the score sheet bulldozing his way over after being fed the ball by Bolwell.

Honiton scored a couple of consolation tries in quick succession before normal service resumed with Blyth scoring from a set play. Ben Bolwell finally got on the score sheet himself after ripping the ball from a Honiton player deep in the opposition half then scampering forty metres to score a fine individual try. Joe Blyth completed his hat trick with a long range effort with the last play of the game.

Withycombe U7s away at Cullompton on 20th November 2011

W 6 - 11 | W 8 - 10

The best all round team display this year saw the youngest Withies prove to strong for Cullompton on their own turf. With the team missing several regulars, the rest of the side pulled together to put on a show for the large travelling support.

As the first game started it became apparent the Withies were on their game as very strong defence and relentless tagging led to Cully being pushed further and further back. This led to Ebony getting the first score of the day. Cullompton came back well, and with two scores in quick succession took the lead for the only time in the game. From here on it was all Withycombe. Sharp passing, strong running, constant pressure and good support play saw a tide of green and black score try after try and turn around at 7-2. The second half started in in the same fashion and soon came the try of the game, a superb pass from Curtis Frazer saw Kieran Long set free off on a mazy run past five Cullompton defenders to score his first of many tries for the club. As Withycombe eased off the chance was taken to field all the very youngest Withies, all held their own as tries were exchanged to finish the game Cullompton 6 Withycombe 11.

Try scorers: Baxter Williams 3, Freddie Burnard 2, Tom Waiton 2, Ebony Mardle 1, Jack Greaves 1, Lewis Alford 1, Kieran Long 1

As game two got under way it soon became clear that once again Withies had the upper hand. Ebony and Jack G again got the game off to a very good start, although Cullompton were allowed back into the game as tries were exchanged to turn around around at 4-4. After the break the Withycombe defence was stronger than ever with hardly a tag being missed by Curtis, Baxter or Ebony. This gave the platform for some expansive passing to set up tries for Jack Macdonald-Brown and Freddie Burnard. With a two try lead the Withies never seriously looked like losing the game, and the game was was finally made safe. And some impressive support play by Thomas Lawrence saw him receive the ball and race to the line to celebrate his birthday with his first Withycombe try. All in all another superb display. Final score Cullompton 8 Withycombe 10.

Try scorers: Jack Greaves 3, Jack MacDonald-Brown 2, Ebony Mardle 1, Freddie Burnard 1, Baxter Williams 1, Joe Gosling 1, Thomas Lawrence, 1

Man of the Match: Curtis Frazer for excellent tagging and all round defensive display.

Mentions must go to Kieran Long, Thomas Lawrence and Jack MacDonald-Brown, three of the youngest Withies for good running and tagging and scoring their first Withycombe tries.

Withycombe U8s away at Cullompton on 20th November 2011

W 5 - 13 | W 5 - 11

Withycombe travelled to Cullompton where they faced a strong and well organised team in a great morning of junior rugby. Match 1 was incredibly close in the first half but yet again unbeaten all season Withycombe showed why they are the team to beat as they pushed hard in attack and forced errors and made several turnovers to dominate Cullompton in the second half. Some amazing play from the whole team but Man of the match Charlie Passmore shone in his alertness to pounce on spilled balls and chances, and his explosive speed was too much for Cullompton to cope with.

Try scorers:  Charlie Passmore 4, Sam Skinner 3,  Paddy McGuinness 2, Erin Asselman 2, Harry Bennett 1,  Joe Farmer 1

In game 2 there was some top notch rugby on display, with brilliant team play and exciting solo runs by by both sides. Withycombe defended excellently with Ollie Hempstead and Charlie Tyler tagging all over the pitch and captain Joe Farmer stopping Cullompton at every chance. A truly great try involving Erin Asselman and Paddy McGuinness got a huge round of applause from the side lines and yet again Withycombe came out winners overall.

Withycombe U9s away at Cullompton on 20th November 2011

W 3 - 4 | W 3 - 6

Following a brilliant day at the Chiefs for Super Saturday, the U9s travelled to Cullompton on Sunday to put some of their newly learnt skills in to practice. Both clubs had good sized squads and were able to field almost two separate teams for two matches on a balmy November morning.

In match 1 Withy were slow to start but were quickly shaken in to action after two quick scores from and organised Cully team. Good driving and tackling from the Withy side presented the opportunity for Will Cooper to score in the corner and fend off the Cully attack to go in 2-1 down at half time. Following the half time team talk Withy came out firing on all cylinders with Will Cornish and Matthew Edworthy driving over the ball and tirelessly tacking to allow three scores in quick succession from the Withy trio of Ben Wilkinson, Tom Real and Will Cooper. A late rally from Cully pulled one try back but the Withies held out with strong defence to win a close game 4-3.

Try scorers: Will Cooper 2, Ben Wilkinson 1, Tom Real 1
Withy Man of the Match: Will Cornish for his superb tackling.

In match 2 with the majority of both sides replaced with fresh players, the first half was a close affair with solid tackling but Cully once more went two ahead. Withy rallied well with excellent running and rucking to score a long range breakaway try for Will Cooper as the ball was fed out wide to him just before the break. Whatever the coaches said at half time it worked a treat as the Withies charged through the second half driving Cully off the ball and making superb tackles all over the park. There were three breakaway tries for Tom Humphrey, Tom Real and Will Cooper followed by a good steal from Tom Humphrey to turn the ball over on the Cully line to score and a good passing move to put Will Cooper in at the corner. Cully scored in the last minute to settle the final score at 6-3 to Withycome. A solid performance from all the boys in both matches - well done!

Withy try scorers: Will Cooper 3, Tom Humphrey 2, Tom Real 1
Withy Man of the Match: Joe Graham, great running & Zac Burnard for an all round great effort round effort.

Withycombe U10s away at Cullompton on 20th November 2011

W 0 - 15 | L 10 - 5

Withycombe under 10’s had a full weekend of rugby last weekend with the majority of the squad spending the day at Exeter Chiefs for ‘Super Saturday’. The day involved a two hour training session in the morning, delivered by many of the Chief’s first team squad. The lads then formed a guard of honour for the Chiefs and their Italian opponents Cavalieri Prato before settling down to watch the Chiefs win convincingly sixty eight points to nil.

Sunday then saw the players themselves in action in two entertaining matches at Stafford Park Cullompton with both sides gaining a victory apiece.

Withycombe fielded their most experienced side in the first match in what turned out to be one of the toughest and most exciting games of the season so far. It was obvious from the start that neither side were going to give their respective opponents any quarter with both defences outstanding. It took a piece of exceptional play to break the deadlock just before half time. The play was a set move that saw the ball passed to Oscar Moyle, who showed great awareness to cut a brilliant angle to break the defensive line, before outpacing the covering defence to score.

The second try could not have been more satisfying for the Withycombe coaches with the initial impetus being delivered by the forwards who set up a succession of rucks before the ball was sent out to the backs with first Ben Bolwell making one of his customary sniping runs, prior to feeding the rest of his back line. Oscar Moyle and Ollie Leeming then showed great awareness setting up Lucas White in space who left the covering defence in his wake to scorch to the try line.

If the first two tries were about guile and fluidity the third and final try epitomised the hunger and desire that this side has. Cullompton were in possession of the ball close to the half line but Withycombe pressed them eventually causing the ball to be spilled. The initial loose ball was gathered by Joe Blyth who broke through a couple of tackles before off loading to the marauding Jason Farrant who topped off a fine performance by crashing over the try line to complete the scoring.

Withycombe were able to field a completely changed side for the second encounter, which shows the strength available in this age group. The commitment from this set of players very much mirrored that of their colleagues from the opening match with some of the collisions in both defence and attack raising winces from the on looking parents.
Once again there was very little to chose between the two opposing sides with defences nullifying out any attacks whether it be at close quarters or through outstanding covering tackles, one in particular from Kyle Parry that stopped a certain Cullompton try.

Cullompton did eventually break their duck with one of their players reacting quicker to a loose ball that he gathered on the half way line before setting off to score a well taken try.

Their second try followed almost from the restart in very similar circumstances but this time the Cullompton player fed the loose ball to one of his team mates to score on half time.

The Withycombe team showed great resolve in the second half with Josh Arbury and Adam Littlejohn leading from the front and taking the game to Cullompton. This allowed Jake Yarwood time and space to make some telling runs one of which set up a scrum close to the Cullompton line that resulted in Ben Bolwell scampering over from close range to score a well deserved try.

The try set up a grandstand finish but try as they might Withycombe couldn’t draw level.

Withy Under 7s at home to Exmouth Sunday 6th November

D 3 - 3 | W 10 - 3

Perfect 10 for Withy Youngsters

Withycombe Under 7's entertained their nearest rivals Exmouth last weekend on a sunny autumnal day and the games matched the weather. Large crowds from both teams helped give the occasion a real carnival atmosphere. Before the games both teams impeccably showed their respect for the area's local heroes with a minutes silence.

The games started at a very lively pace for Exmouth, although Withycombe were very slow starters and looked off the pace. Exmouth duly took advantage to score first. A cagy first half wore on with much of the play in midfield, until Withy were able to breakaway and good passing and support saw Joe Gosling get the score level. A quick follow up try from Baxter Williams saw the sides turn around at 2-1. Half time seemed to galvanise Exmouth who again started very strongly, by creating chances, and it was rewarded as they scores twice quickly to take the lead. With time running out in the game Withycombe looked to exploit the open spaces but were being shut out by some stubborn Exmouth defence. Then with a minute left Withy picked up the ball at halfway, and a mazy run past most of the Exmouth team saw Jaydan Marles score the levelling try. Final score Withy 3 Exmouth 3.

Try scorers: Joe Gosling 1, Baxter Williams 1, Jayden Marles 1

When the teams came out for the second game Withy looked as if they had been given a new lease of life. This quickly became apparent as the passing was slicker, the tagging more accurate and the running and support faster and straighter. This added up to Withy taking an early 2-0 lead, only for Exmouth to come back well and level the scores a at 2-2. From here on in it was a green and black tide towards the Exmouth line. Eight unanswered tries either side of half time saw Withycombe take control of the game and put the result out of the visitors reach. However credit to the Exmouth team who continued to play hard and got the last score of the game to make the final score Withy 10 Exmouth 3.

Try scorers: Ebony Mardle 4, Baxter Williams 3, Jack Greaves 2, Jaydan Marles 1.

An excellent local derby played in a tremendous spirit. Withy took the opportunity to give three new players their first ever games and all made contributions. With both these teams showing this commitment the future of Rugby in the town looks to be very safe. Next week Withy travel to Brixham.

Withy Under 8s at home to Exmouth Sunday 6th November

W 12 - 8 | W 17 - 2

In the first of the local derby clashes it was neck and neck with both teams scoring and tagging well to enjoyment of all watching. Exmouth pushed Withycombe hard and it took a real team effort with over half the team getting on the score sheet to be the victors. In defence Withycombe were solid and had to deal with some great Exmouth play, stopping them just short of the try line numerous times. However as the game went on Withycombe dealt the killer blows to ensure victory.

Try Scorers: Charlie Passmore 2, Sam Skinner 1, Alfie Gillard 2, Harry Bennett 2, Ollie Hempstead 1, Paddy McGuinness 3

The second encounter was a much more 1 sided affair. Although Exmouth started strong the stamina, pace and team commitment of Withycombe saw them start to dominate towards the end of the first half. Man of the Match Paddy Mcguiness was superb in his support play converting 6 chances to really push Withycombe ahead. What pleased the coaches most was that Withycombe were a team, with everyone doing their part to force errors and turn the ball over, and also over half the team getting on the score sheet.

Try Scorers: Harry Bennett 3, Alfie Gillard 1, Paddy Mcguiness 6, Charlie Passmore 5, Erin Asselman 2, Sam Skinner 1

Withy Under 9s at home to Exmouth Sunday 6th November

L 4 - 6

A first time local derby for Withy U9s, hosting visitors from across town in front of an expectant crowd from both sides.

As expected the opening exchanges were tense with both sides probing each others lines, each defending with gritty purpose, keeping the action to the middle third of the pitch. Withy finally broke the deadlock to launch themselves deep into the visitors half from strong individual running as a result of great recycling at the breakdown. A resulting scrum to Exmouth saw birthday boy Will Cooper smuggle up some loose ball to notch up the first points of the game. This was quickly followed up by another break down the right wing, with Ben Wilkinson in support to take the pass to run in some fantastic fast yards to make it 2 - 0.

A determined Exmouth countered with ferocious tackling to consistently deny Withy possession soon setting up camp in the green and black half of the pitch. Despite some equally fierce Withy defence Exmouth’s hard work was finally rewarded with a Ieaun Brockway try in the corner. Similar Exmouth attacking play levelled the game 2 - 2 before Withy rallied with a well worked team effort up the pitch to send in the hard working Matthew Edworthy to make it 3 – 2 at the break. Hooker, William Cornish impressed with his securing of the ball and hard running.

A good Withy squad turn out allowed a new team to take the field for the second half while Exmouth opted for a roll on/off of subs throughout. Despite some encouraging attacking play from the new Withy team, Exmouth continued to build momentum with Brockway very notable with his excellent tackling. The visitors soon had the game levelled before adding a further two tries from continued pressure.

Withy fought back well finally retaining some ball to send in Tom Real and Jayden Gore on fine probing runs following good team play to push back the visitors. Spilled ball from an Exmouth lineout close to their try line was deftly pounced upon up by replacement Cooper to make it 4 - 5, in the closing stages. Withy momentum was finally turned over with the visitors finally sealing the game with a sixth try at the end.

An enjoyable and absorbing game of very determined rugby from both teams, played in a sporting manner with the better side taking the final honours through superior tackling and pressure play. Hopefully, the first of many such local encounters.

Try scorers: Will Cooper 2, Ben Wilkinson 1, Matthew Edworthy 1

Withy Man of the Match: First Half - New boy Owen Devlin for all round involvement

Withy Man of the Match: Second Half - Tom Real for determined running and tackling

With Exmouth electing to play one match only, the Withy boys went onto to enjoy a competitive training match against each other following this fixture.

Withy Under 10s at home to Exmouth Sunday 6th November

W 35 - 5 | W 25 - 20

Withycombe welcomed their cross town rivals to Raleigh Park for two keenly fought matches played in glorious conditions with Withycombe victorious in both.

The first match saw Withycombe running out convincing winners scoring seven tries to Exmouth’s one. The victory was built on the home side’s forward dominance and superior teamwork, which they displayed throughout the game.

Withycombe’s first try was scored by Oscar Moyle who jinked through a couple of tackles before out pacing the covering defence to score in the corner. This was closely followed by the first of a brace of tries scored by the tenacious Ben Bolwell. Not to be outdone, Joe Blyth scored the first of his two tries soon after with a bulldozing run that saw him take two defenders over the line with him. Bolwell completed the scoring of the first half with another well taken effort.

Two of the three tries scored by Withycombe in the second half quite fittingly went to two of the forwards with Archie Symons and Jason Farrant scoring tries from close range after good approach work by their forward colleagues Harry Cartwright and Josh Farr.

Exmouth did manage a consolation try from Ben Dawson who took his try very well but Withycombe responded with Blyth completing the scoring on the final whistle.

Try scorers: Oscar Moyle 1, Ben Bolwell 2, Joe Blyth 2, Archie Symons 1, Jason Farrant 1

The second game allowed the home side’s coaches the opportunity to ‘blood’ some of Withycombe’s most recent recruits who are developing and learning more about the game as each week passes. The match turned out to be a much closer encounter with the result being in the balance right up to the final whistle.

Once again Ben Bolwell scored a first half brace of tries, the first of which saw him robbing the ball off an opponent close to his own line and racing the length of the field to score a solo effort. His second try couldn’t have been much different as it came at the end of a passage of play that saw the majority of the team handling the ball before it was fed out to Bolwell to finish of a very well worked team try.

Jason Farrant scored Withycombe’s third try using his long reach to finish a move that had been started off with a rampaging run by Adam Littlejohn. Exmouth came back into the game scoring a try on the stroke of half time.

Exmouth started the second half the brighter scoring three tries in a row that saw them take a five point lead in proceedings. History then repeated itself with an Exmouth player once again being stripped of the ball whilst in Withycombe territory, this time by Finlay Frazier who showed great pace to out strip the Exmouth defenders.

The score set up a barn storming finish with both sides throwing everything they had into both attack and defence. The deciding score came about after Lukas White made a dazzling run stepping off both feet, which saw play taken up close to the Exmouth line. The ball was recycled by the Withycombe forwards for Joe Blyth to pick up and stretch out to place the ball over the line.

Try scorers: Ben Bolwell 2, Jason Farrant 1, Finlay Frazier 1, Joe Blyth 1

Withy Under 7s away to Topsham on Sunday 30th October

L 8 - 6 | W 4 - 6

"The best match seen at Topsham this year" was how it was described by a Topsham coach as Withycombe Under 7's made the short trip to Topsham on Sunday to face their nearby rivals on a cloudy windswept morning.

Game one started with the Topsham first seven off to a fast start with two early tries. The young Withies soon responded and fought back to 3-2 within a matter of minutes. However from this point on in the game the "no going to ground" rule when scoring would haunt the Withies again. As tries were exchanged, Withies found themselves having three tries chalked off for this offence. The final score ending up 8-6 to Topsham.

Game Two saw the Withies start with high tempo and concerted pressure, to put Topsham securely on the back foot and soon they opened up a 3-1 lead. A quick try from Topsham saw the teams turn around at 3-2. In the second half all the Withycombe team played their best rugby of the season so far to extend the lead. As the game wore on Withy took control of the game, and with the last play of the game took the opportunity to string together a run of 14 passes to hand. The final score 6-4 to Withycombe.

Notable mentions this week must go to player off the match Ebony Mardle, and some superb tackling from Joe Gosling and Jayden Marles. But overall an excellent display from the youngest of the Withycombe teams with improvement from all concerned. Next match Exmouth at home Sunday 6th Nov.

Withy Under 8s away to Topsham on Sunday 30th October

W 3 - 5 | W 1 - 5

Withycombe travelled up river and faced a well drilled and strong Topsham side. The first game was neck and neck until Man of the match Alfie Gillard made the tag of the game/season when Topsham broke leaving Withycombe for dead with only Alfie left in defence. Alfie made an amazing last ditch tag to to stop Topsham in their tracks and kept the game at 3-3. Withycombe then turned the ball over to score and added another right at the whilst to secure the game 5-3. Another great team effort with several players notably Oliver Willis supporting and tagging well.

Try Scorers: Charlie Passmore 3, Erin Asselman 1, Harry Bennett 1

Withycombe were the stronger team in the second game defending well, and although both teams made a few errors they managed to secure the win and take the seasons total to 100% victories.  Some superb play by Harry Bennett to score 3 times and outstanding defending by James Griffin showed that Withycombe are the under 8's team to try and beat this year.

The under 8's are still on the look out for players to strengthen the side so please get in touch with the club if you are interested in joining a friendly, fun and successful team.

Withy Under 9s away to Topsham on Sunday 30th October

L 4 - 2 | W 1 - 8

Withycombe U9s travelled to nearby Topsham with usual good numbers to effectively field two teams with some interchange of playing personnel per match.

The first game was a dogged and close affair producing some good rugby from both sides. Topsham took the game to Withy early on and the boys had to show determined defence to keep the home side at bay with some strong tackling. With their own possession Withy put in hard straight running to penetrate Topsham’s equally strong defence with Jayden Gore notable in leading the charge, gaining valuable ground every time. Will Cooper scored from a penalty to make it 2:1 at the break to Topsham. With the benefit of the slope and some tactical half time changes Withy began to step up a gear in the second half with more straight running and hard tackling. Matthew Edworthy scored the Withies second try as a result of a great team move initiated by a fantastic William Jones run. A very hard fought game which Withy could count themselves unlucky not to have at least levelled. Despite all the good Withy tackling and breaking runs Topsham were repeatedly gifted possession from a few phases of poor Withy rucking.

Try Scorers: Will Cooper 1, Matthew Edworthy 1

Man of the Match: Max Rickards for “Mahooffin” tackling of players nearly twice his size !

If game 1 was slightly let down by phases of soft play around the ruck area the second encounter more than made up for it. An aggressive, solid and clearly defiant Withy defensive line mauled and rucked and counter rucked the home side all over the pitch to secure ball to unleash the awaiting runners. Topsham had worked well in the first game at the breakdown but a resurgent Withy team clearly rattled the home side in repeatedly pushing them back towards their own line or out into touch. Continued hard tackling and probing running coupled with the much improved recycling allowed Withy to storm the game in all areas. A late Topsham reply was snuffed out by fierce cover tackling from Ben Wilkinson. This was probably the most encouraging display by the U9s to date presenting a real platform from which to build upon. The game was won by an all round spirited team effort.

Try Scorers: Will Cooper 6, Ben Wilkinson 2

Man of the Match:  Matthew Edworthy for a superb display of tackling and consistently taking the ball into contact and recycling well.

Withy Under 10s away to Topsham on Sunday 30th October

W 0 - 3 | W 3 - 4

Good numbers from both clubs meant two game were played. Playing on a very big pitch with a large slope in the Withies favour in the first half. This gave the team a great advantage which they seized by scoring three unanswered tries in the first half. The teams drills are beginning to pay dividends as we created space to exploit. Again our defence was solid with fine tackling from Oscar Moyle at fly half and Joe Blythe in his role as scrum half/flanker. The forwards won most of the ball in the scrums and Jason Farrant won most of the 50/50 ball on the ground depriving Topsham of any quality ball. Jake Yarwood played well coming off his wing on numerous occasions to break the Topsham defence. The second half seemed to be played on the half way line as the slope made it hard for Withycombe to go forward as they had in the first half. It was a very rewarding for the team to keep Topsham off the score sheet as they came close on a couple of occasions. A great game played in great spirit. Final score 3-0 to Withycombe.

Try scorer: Ben Bolwell 3

The second game saw some of the newer lads take to the field and again entertained the crowd with some excellent rugby. Lukas White on the wing played well with some great running and was rewarded with two tries the second an intercept on our own line followed by the long run up the hill to score. Josh Farr scored his first try for the team and is proving very hard to stop he could of had two but one was not awarded as he went over the dead ball line, he has learnt a valuable lesson. A few tackles were missed which gave away a couple of tries but the team is improving every week. Final score 4-3 to Withycombe.

Try scorers: Lukas White 2, Ben Bolwell 1, Josh Farr 1

Withy Under 7s away to Kingsbridge on Sunday 16th October

L 5 - 3 | L 7 - 2

Withycombe Under 7's made the long trip to Kingsbridge on Sunday to face a very stiff and determined opposition. The game started with Kingsbridge fielding the strongest seven and soon finding an early lead as they played down the slope. The Withycombe youngsters came back well and turned around at 3-1. Withycombe put in a much more determined display in the second half which saw them level the scores through Jack Greaves and Lewis Alford. However Kingsbridge again stuck to their task and scored two late tries to record a 5-3 win in game one. Things could have been different for the young Withies however had two tries not been ruled out somewhat harshly for going to ground.

The second game saw Kingsbridge completely change their playing personnel, and these fresh legs were very evident as they opened up a 3-0 lead. With lungs bursting playing up the hill, the Withies dug deep and responded to get within one score after tries from Baxter Williams and Jack Greaves. However the grounding rule would come to haunt Withycombe as two more tries were chalked off. As legs tired Kingsbridge were able to take advantage and score more late tries to run out eventual winners 7-2.

However all the players should be proud of their effort and commitment. And a big thanks must go to all parents and supporters for making the trip making it an enjoyable away game. Next Sunday sees the young Withies travel to Torquay.

Withy Under 8s away to Kingsbridge on Sunday 16th October

W 6 - 10 | W 6 - 7

Withycombe and Kingsbridge were evenly matched sharing scoring honours up until halftime when Withycombe pushed hard turning over and forcing errors to walk away the winners. Some truly outstanding running by both Samuel skinner and Charlie Passmore getting 4 each as well as the ever present Alfie Gillard with 2. New players Joe Farmer and Kieran Davies also showed potential with great tagging and support play.

Try Scorers: Sam Skinner 4, Charlie Passmore 4, Alfie Gillard 2

Game 2 was Withycombe's hardest game so far this season and a real end to end game enjoyed not only by the players but by all watching. It was nail biting stuff with the score going backwards and forwards and a truly great example of junior rugby at its finest. With great runs and scores by Harry Bennett and Erin Asselman to keep Withycombe in the game, and some great defending by players like Charlie Tyler it looked like a stalemate was inevitable. However on the final play of the day, man of the match and captain Paddy McGuinness added a a third to get a hat trick with an amazing run through players and an exquisite side step taking him over the line to finish 7-6 in Withycombes favour.

Try Scorers: Harry Bennett 2, Erin Asselman 2, Paddy McGuinness 3

A truly great day of rugby with parents and coaches from both sides commenting on the standard of play and also the manners and politeness showed by both clubs.

Withy Under 9s away to Kingsbridge on Sunday 16th October

W 2 - 4 | L 3 - 1

Withycombe made the long journey away to Kingsbridge on a beautiful Autumn morning that promised to offer up some exciting and competitive rugby. Both sides were able to field close to two teams so it was decided that two games would be played.

The first Withy team to take to the field was captained by Matthew Edworthy who certainly took his role seriously and led by example throughout the match. It was a close affair and it is fair to say that the opposition were extremely well drilled. Withy opened the scoring after a tense first few minutes when a penetrating run by Will Cooper allowed Thomas Humphry to touch down. The second Withy try came from a powerful run by Matthew Edworthy who cut back in field to make it over the line. Some strong Withy tackling held Kingsbridge at bay and the team worked well together. In the second half a few Kingsbridge changes saw them come out stronger and more determined. They repeatedly threatened to score and Ben Wilkinson was on hand to put in some excellent try saving tackles. However, Kingsbridge stuck to the task and were able to break a series of Withy tackles to score a well deserved try. Withycombe continued to apply pressure and a strong piece of rucking allowed Matthew Edworthy to pass to Will Cooper who scored Withy’s fourth and final try of the match. Kingsbridge continued to play hard and were rewarded with another try.

Special mention must be made for Rory Burston and Owen Delvin who have joined the squad this year and are constantly improving and getting stuck in in matches.

Try Scorers: Thomas Humphry 1, Matthew Edworthy 1, Will Cooper 2
Man of the Match: Matthew Edworthy - outstanding all round performance.

After a quick turnaround the second game was swiftly under way with an almost completely different Withy side. Jayden Gore took on the mantle of Captain and did a fantastic job of leading from the front. Withy set up a powerful driving maul and were edging forward but unfortunately they were unable to use the ball and lost possession. Kingsbridge looked determined to even the honours and they applied heavy pressure that forced Withy into some basic handling errors. However, Withy weren’t dispirited and some excellent tackling was seen from all, especially Zac Burnard and Max Rickards. The half ended with no score but in fairness Kingsbridge looked the stronger of the two sides. In the second half Withy were constantly pushed off their own ball by some impressive Kingsbridge rucking and Withy often found themselves going backwards in possession. A break away try and a smart move down the blindside of a scrum saw Kingsbridge score two quick tries. Again, Withy did not give up and a strong run by William Cornish towards the try line was unfortunately denied by a strong tackle and the touchline. Tired Withy players seemed to lose direction but some strong and direct running by the Captain showed them the way and they finished the game with a try in the corner from a purposeful run by Jayden Gore.

Try Scorer: Jayden Gore (1)
Man of the Match: Jayden Gore - Direct and powerful running.

Withy Under 10s away to Kingsbridge on Sunday 16th October

Withies growing under 10 squad travelled to Kingsbridge almost able to field two separate teams. It was agreed to play two games as both clubs have growing numbers with the more established players playing first and the newer boys playing second.

The first match was as ever a hard game with the Withy team winning 3 tries to 2. The team managed to frustrate an excellent Kingsbridge team by winning most of the rucks and mauls turning over plenty of ball. Our rush defence is now also playing dividends as this caused many handling error from the much vaunted Kingsbridge backs with comments from the touch line saying our boys (Kingsbridge) have no room to run. The team is playing well for each other and are becoming hard to beat.

Try scorer: Ben Bolwell 3

The second game started poorly with some of the new boys having only started rugby three weeks ago finding it hard (its a complicated game even for England squad) . The team when three tries down and things looked bad but the team started to grow and made some fine breaks and tightened up the defence. They pulled the score back to three a piece but lost out in the end by a single try.

Try scorers: Jason Farrent 1, Kyle Parry 1, and Ben Bolwell 1

Withy Under 7s at home to Sidmouth on Sunday 9th October

D 2 - 2 | L 3 - 4

Withycombe entertained an experienced Sidmouth side at Raleigh Park on Sunday. Both sides looked ready for a good game in the sunshine, and sure enough neither side disappointed. Game one opened with some fast flowing phases with the game going from on end to another. Eventually the spirited Withy defence gave way for Sidmouth to open the scoring. The response was almost immediate from the restart, with the ball being passed neatly around for Jack Greaves to level the scores. Both sides continued to press into the second half, however it was again Sidmouth who took the initiative after a mistake within the Withycombe defence. Again the Withies came back strongly and got a deserved equaliser through Baxter Williams. As time ran down in the second half Withycombe looked stronger, however it was not to be and a 2-2 draw was a fair result.

The second game got under way with Sidmouth looking shocked at the previous result and Withycombe opened up a 3-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game through Baxter, Jack and the try of the day from Joe Gosling after excellent running with from Baxter and Joe being in the ideal spot to receive the pass and cross the line in the corner. All of this only seemed to awaken Sidmouth who from then on in looked a different team. Superb running and handling from Sidmouth was matched by stern tackling, however two late tries in the half changed the whole complexion of the game. As the second half wore on Sidmouth's extra experience and numbers began to tell and with Withycombe beginning to tire they took full advantage to stretch the game and come away with two more scores to seal a 4-3 Sidmouth win.

The Withycombe youngsters should come away from this game with heads high, and despite the result the performance in the second game was a tremendous improvement from last week, and if the learning carries on at this pace then Withycombe under 7's will be in for many successes.

Withy Under 8s at home to Sidmouth on Sunday 9th October

W 9 - 3 | W 4 - 1

Withycombe played some excellent rugby especially in the 2nd half with some great runs from new boy Ollie Hempstead and a great run from James Griffin. Defending was Withycombe's strength turning the ball over numerous times or forcing errors. Alfie Gillard was the stand out of the first game with his 2 and Charlie Passmore again showed his immense pace to score 3.

Try Scorers: Charlie Passmore 3, Ollie Hempstead 1, Alfie Gillard 2, Harry Bennett 1, James Griffin 1, Erin Asselman 1

A much harder game with great play by both teams until half time when man of the match Samuel skinner twice forced Sidmouth down the outside in to touch to win the ball back, which was then followed up by 2 great scores from Erin Asselman. Withycombe remained the stronger team until the final whistle with new players in what was another final display of junior rugby.

Try Scorers; Erin Asselman 2, Harry Bennett 1, Charlie Passmore 1

Withy Under 9s at away at Sidmouth on Sunday 9th October

W 0 - 2 | W 5 - 8

Following the emphatic win last week, Withy U9s faced much stiffer opposition playing away at Sidmouth on a bright and breezy Sunday morning. With the two sides having strength in depth both were able to field two teams each to play in separate matches.

As expected the first half proved evenly matched with both teams making breaks and almost scoring at either end. It was only the strong defences of both teams that prevented any scoring before the break. The strong tackling continued in the second half with a couple of try-saving tackles made by Ben Wilkinson to keep a clean sheet for Withy. As the match began to open up, Will Cooper eventually broke the defences with a drifting run to score in the corner. It looked like neither side would score again until a barn-storming run from Matthew Edworthy through the centre of the field set up Will Cooper for his second try and a well deserved win.

Try scorers: Will Cooper 2
Man of the match: Ben Wilkinson for his superb tackling

Two games were played with the more experienced players from both squads playing the first game followed by the newer players in the second. The first game saw Sidmouth's front row the BIG difference between the sides. They won all there own ball and most of ours as the Withy pack failed to deal with the large lads from Sidmouth. The first try coming from Sidmouth as they went through the middle of a maul to score. Withies responded through Jason and scored after a strong run down the wing. Sidmouth maintained pressure to score two further tries. The second half was just as fierce with Oscar scoring first for Withycombe with a little help from Harry and Josh. Withy Under 7s away at Teignmouth on Sunday 2nd October

W 2 - 7 | W 2 - 3

On a bright Sunday morning Withycombe under 7's ventured to Teignmouth, for their first competitive game, with hope, expectation and no little amount of nerves. And that was just parents. Game one started at a very brisk pace with Withycombe racing to an early 4-0 lead with tries from Jack Greaves and Baxter Williams. As the half came to a close tries were exchanged. The second half continued as the first had ended with Withycombe on top and any Teignmouth error being punished with a try. The final score was 7-2 to Withycombe with Jack Greaves, Baxter Williams, Curtis Frazer and Joe Gosling all among the tries.

Game two turned out to be a much closer fought affair with Teignmouth visibly being tighter defence. However the first score off the game went Withycombe's way with Abigail Cook showing a clean pair of heels to the defence to score in the corner. Teignmouth levelled before halftime to turn around at 1-1. Early in the second half Lewis Alford scored possibly the seasons cheekiest try on the first day to restore Withycombes lead. With Teignmouth again levelling a tense final few minutes followed until with the last play of the game Baxter Williams outflanked the defenders to score and give the Withies their second win of the day 3-2.

For their first outing all went well, and things look set for a promising season at the under 7 level.

Withycombe played their first game of the season starting as they left of last season with 2 wins.

Great first game from the Withys with the action going backwards and forwards but Withycombe showed their defensive skills twice turning over. Try scorers: Paddy Mcguiness 1, Charlie Passmore 1, Erin Asselman 1, Sam Skinner 1, Oliver Willis 1

An utterly brilliant game by both sides and a great example of junior tag rugby in game 2 with Withycombe again coming out on top. In a game of turnovers and last ditched defending it could have gone either way but 2 amazing scores from Paddy Mcguiness and strong runs from the likes of Sam Skinner made sure Withycombe managed to complete 2 wins on their first day of the season and look forward to another successful year.

W 6 - 0 | W 3 - 0

Withy U9s opened up their first season of contact rugby in emphatic style on a very hot Sunday 2nd October 2011 hosting visitors from Teignmouth. With squad numbers up yet again Withy were able to field two well balanced sides to play separate matches.

Teignmouth opened strongly retaining possession and it was only the ferocious tackling of Withycombe that denied them an early score. Withy eventually gained possession to see Jayden Gore unleash a bulldozing run up the pitch with great support from all, Max Rickards picked up well rucked ball to score the first ever Withy U9s full contact try with a very determined run to the line.

With their tails up Withy took control of the game repeatedly winning back hard won possession from a determined opposition, good recycling and handling saw a further 5 tries scored from strong individual running.

Try scorers: Max Rickard (1), Thomas Humphry (3), Tom Real (2). Man of the match newcomer Will Jones for outstanding tackling

Despite already having played one game Teignmouth gained in strength to provide stiffer opposition in the second match against fresh Withy legs.

Withy took the game to the visitors and were camped out on their try line for much of the first half, repeatedly punching holes following great rucking and mauling. Score one try to Withy at HT due to determined defence from Teigns.

A closely fought second half saw fantastic Withy tackling which denied Teignmouth any progression up the field. With turnover ball Withies demonstrated great teamwork to put in multiple strong running attacks to dominate in the end.

Try scorers: Will Cooper (3). Man of the Match, Will Cooper for good all round effort

A mention must be given to U9s coaches Mark Wilkinson and Mark Burnard plus all the willing dads who have put in a lot of pre-season work to successfully drill and mould the boys in the basics of contact rugby.

Under 10s  at home to Teignmouth on Sunday 2nd October

W 2 - 1 | W 3 - 1

A fine start to the season as the Withies under 10s welcomed Teignmouth to Raleigh Park on a hot October morning.

The first game was played with both teams fielding there most experienced player the second to be played with some of the newer player both club have attracted over the summer. Teignmouth gave Withycombe there hardest games of last year so these fixtures were eagerly awaited to see how the team would fair against strong opposition. All the hard training in pre season was rewarded with a fine display of rugby and the teams winning both matches.

The first game was a bruising encounter with Teignmouth's large athletic runners finding it hard to break the withies well drilled defence. It was the visitors who opened the scoring with a try after sustained pressure. The Withies struck back as Ben Bolwell from the half way line broke down the blind side from a ruck to find no Teignmouth player in front of him to score. The forwards did well in the scrums and lineouts to win a fare share of ball giving the back a few chances to try out some set moves. The Withies scored what was too be the winning try from a scrum near the opposition try line the ball was hooked back by Harry Cartwright for Ben Bolwell to gather and go over for the try. Special mention must go the Finley Frazer and Oli Leeming the centres who did not miss a tackle all game. With Oli having to mark the Teignmouth star player credit should go to him.

The second game was played in equally fine spirit with players from both teams playing a match for the first time. Well done to Adam Littlejohn and Kyle Parry for getting stuck in both showed great promise. The team won the second game by 3-1 with try scorers Joe Blythe 2 and Jake Yarwood 1.
